Thanks for posting. I just heard the other day…I haven’t been able to put my thoughts together…it’s a huge loss. He believed in my work when I was hesitant…he served as the external examiner on my dissertation. It was a 3 hour cross-examination and some of the best hours of my life.

youtu.be/vRgXL2tf0Cc?.... The Jimmy Kimmel affair reminds us that the Rule of Law underpins democracy. Roncarelli v Duplessis reminds us that politicians must be bound by law.

Free speech is under attack. As we have seen over the last several weeks, #cdnmedia - like counterparts in the US - report on this issue selectively, sanitizing the speech of mostly right wing pundits & politicians. This is old news, of course, but also why late night “comedy” became so important.

WGA Statement on ABC’s Decision to Pull Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The right to speak our minds and to disagree with each other - to disturb, even - is at the very heart of what it means to be a free people. It is not to be denied. Not by violence, not by the abuse of governmental power, nor by acts of corporate cowardice.
As a Guild, we stand united in opposition to anyone who uses their power and influence to silence the voices of writers, or anyone who speaks in dissent. If free speech applied only to ideas we like, we needn't have bothered to write it into the Constitution. What we have signed on to - painful as it may be at times - is the freeing agreement to disagree.
Shame on those in government who forget this founding truth. As for our employers, our words have made you rich.
Silencing us impoverishes the whole world.
The WA stands with Jimmy Kimmel and his writers.

So much for “free speech”…I guess it’s only for MAGA. Hypocrites.

I’ve revamped my Canadian Legal History at UNB Law to focus foundational civil liberties such as freedom of expression, freedom of religion, habeas corpus, the Magna Carta, etc. Back to basics in an era of erosion…this FDR quote reminds us why the U.S. used to be the leader of the free world..:

This July, Cnds with disabilities are due to start receiving an extra $200 per month from the Canada Disability Benefit. Except in Alberta, where that income will flow to the prov'l government.

The AB Gov't must reverse its decision to claw back this benefit: calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu...
Opinion: In Alberta’s grab for federal cash, Albertans with disabilities pay the price
The Canada Disability Benefit has become a subsidy for the province's finances that will have no positive impact on those with disabilities.
