I worked with Danielle Fenton-Rosvally, Julia Fawcett, & Amy Cook to create a document with best practices for search committees conducting an academic job search in TDPS.

I hope it’s a useful document & that committees will take some of this advice to heart.

We’d be in a much stronger position right now if mainstream Democrats had taken a common sense stand for First Amendment principles instead of piling on undergraduate standing up for Palestine.

Disney has Tron: Ares, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, Rental Family, Zootopia 2, Ella McCay, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and Is This Thing On? opening this year. I hope the talent involved in these movies curtails all planned publicity until the company reverses its decision about Kimmel.

It can't be said often enough: the contemporary US right simply does not accept the background presumption that "we all have to live here together." They want to eliminate liberals! They're very vocal about it!

My optimism here is limited, but I really hope centrist institutions like universities and major news organizations understand that the plan is for the govt to dismantle them. They do not care if you fire your columnists or discipline staff for accurately quoting Kirk. They just want us all gone.

In a Hitleresque speech, JD Vance says there can be no unity with the left and vows to use the government to dismantle non-profit NGOs and liberal civil society who he says promote violence and terrorism.

So much disappointment

We are all beholden to the cowardice of university general counsels, as well as the trustees and administrators who enable them

The “deal” that Brown made with the Trump admin is much more extreme than is being reported. It includes government oversight of course evaluations and no barrier to government interference in faculty hiring.

Read it for yourself here:

1). Convening the Chairs and Deans meeting, which is Monday July 28 at 1:30 eastern. If you are a chair or dean, come chat with other chairs, deans and university leaders about the challenges you're facing and other things on your mind.

A somewhat haphazard ATHE for me, but if you're looking for me you can find me at the following places...

That’s maybe not always what my deans and chairs want to hear (and I’m not slacking off in that area) but it’s true.
It’s been a good summer and I’m thankful for the committees, nominators, and the field. My heart feels full.

But I belong to a community of theatre and performance scholars and what I make and give for others so that there’s a little more ease, transparency, and care just matters more to me than my own scholarship.

or maybe it’s because there was so much I didn’t know about higher education, grad school and the profession until and even after others helped me.

The Service Award hit me in a different register. I got surprisingly emotional (cried in my office) when I found out about this award. It means a lot to me to serve. Maybe that comes from being the grandson of a preacher...

But I was thrilled when the project came into the world and I’m still thrilled by it today. I had a huge smile on my face when Olga and I received the news. The book is super useable in classrooms and will be put in a more affordable paperback before the end of the year.

We wanted to make space for poems, plays, manifestos, writing exercises, and pedagogy in addition to traditional scholarly essays. When we put out the call for essays, we didn’t know what sort of response we would get. Editing fifty pieces from folks with a variety of writing backgrounds was a lot.

I wanted to invite artists to share of their experiences good and bad as performance makers in the United States. Olga and I also realized early on that the book wouldn’t work in the ways we wanted to if it were only essays.

I work (and have worked) in departments where neither of these prizes “counts” much if at all for promotion to Professor, but both of these awards moved me in different ways. The Routledge Companion was built out of a desire to celebrate the richness and diversity of Latine theatre making .

There was a very cool ten day period in late May/ early June when I found out that Olga Sanchez Saltveit and I had won the ATHE Edited Works Prize for the Routledge Companion to Latine Theatre and Performance and that I had also won the Sustained Achievement Award for Service to the Field.
