We’re the grassroots community effort to stop ODOT’s polluting, costly, dumb freeway expansions. Climate leaders don’t widen freeways ❌🛣️❌

"The Interstate Bridge replacement project has always believed it could bully the Coast Guard into approving a much lower fixed span, and its combination of arrogance and hubris have delayed, and once again threaten to kill this project."

Opinion: A bridge too short, again - ClarkCountyToday.com
Joe Cortright argues the I-5 Bridge replacement faces the same Coast Guard clearance issues that doomed the Columbia River Crossing, risking delays and federal funding.

"There were no surprises with votes and everything went pretty much as planned by Democratic leaders, a sentence I haven’t been able to write about this legislative process since it began back in May."

Democrats pass anemic transportation bill as Republicans grandstand to bitter end
It's not the transportation bill any Oregon Democrats wanted, but it's the only one they could pass.

imagine what we could do with the highway trench through albina if we decided against adding more freeway lanes to it

In the heart of Seoul, a ribbon of water now threads through where an expanse of asphalt once stood. The Cheonggyecheon Stream restoration, which replaced a major elevated motorway with an ecological and recreational corridor, has become a powerful case study in placemaking and traffic evaporation.🧵

great stuff from our friends in Minnesota!

Which major highways should Oregon study turning into community boulevards?

Last week, we published a report outlining three roadway design concepts to consider for the future of the Olson Memorial Highway.

This is a great short piece worth thinking about when it comes to transportation & urbanism.

“We cannot optimise both proximity and mobility. Proximity and Mobility cannot be friends. We settle into one of two worlds: (a) high proximity, low mobility or (b) high mobility, low proximity.”
What we mean be high proximity/low mobility verses high mobility/low proximity.

People Waiting at night for the bus
Text: Week Without Driving Monday September 29 - Sunday October 5
If you can drive or afford a car, you may not understand what it’s like to rely on walking, rolling, transit and asking for rides. But for nearly a third of people living in the United States – people with disabilities, young people, seniors and people who can’t afford cars or gas – this is our every day.
We created the Week Without Driving experience so that those who have the option to drive can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face and work with nondrivers to create more accessible communities for all.

juxtaposition between the state planning to practically lay off every snowplow operator across the mountain passes while the interstate bridge jabronies steamroll forward with a ten billion dollar freeway expansion despite having no money in hand + no coherent design plans is breathtaking

Hope y'all saw the terrific reporting from Anthony Macuk and KGW News on the utter disaster that is the gajillion dollar Interstate Bridge Replacement.

3. The cost of the bridge is definitely going up, likely to $9-10 billion. At the same time the US DOT funds are very, very much in doubt. IBR hasn't even applied for the $1 billion for light rail, and IBR could lose existing $2.1 billion federal grants if they don't start by next Sept.

2. The Coast Guard has long insisted that it needs 178 feet of navigation clearance--IBR is hoping it can apply political pressure to USCG to approve the fixed span, but that is looking increasingly less likely.
nomorefreewayspdx.com
1. IBR is in danger of failing to meet the needed deadlines for completing its EIS and getting a Record of Decision.

yikes!

My takeaway from this Sean Duffy letter to the Governor of Maryland is that there's no way in hell they are going to issue a Record of Decision for an Interstate Bridge Replacement that includes light rail.

A thread today from #yimbytown conference. Walkability comes from both land use and transportation policy. Adding housing to walkable neighborhoods lets more people enjoy walkability, as does making streets better.

If you're not happy with how the state transportation system is being planned and implemented, I'm not saying you shouldn't be mad at WSDOT...but you should be more mad at the state legislature.

also possibly the most ambitious mass displacement / housing destruction event in American history - just impossible to wrap your brain around the scale of decades of consequences of the federal government paying cities to destroy so many homes of so many Black and brown communities

Really the most ambitious transportation project in human history in a very real way.

INTERLUDE:
DYK: 1/10th of US interstate highway system was built through the center of cities, costing half of the well over budget program. For the amount spent on these highways, we could have built the equivalent of 36 Paris Metro systems at the cost of Montreal's initial subway lines in 1960s.
