Zoe Gardner: "70% of the asylum seekers who've come to the UK in the last 20 years came from countries that we had previously colonised. That means they speak the language, they have ties to this country, we have communities here"

How much does the UK spend on welfare?

🇪🇺 Relatively little compared to Europe: just 10.8% of GDP in 2023 (including sickness & disability benefits, pensions, etc.).

Meanwhile, 🇫🇮Finland spends 25.7% of GDP & 🇫🇷France 23.8%.

🚨 Disability bill update 🚨

Tomorrow, MPs will be voting on whether to make HUGE cuts to support for disabled people who need it in the future.

MPs have had barely any chance to look at the detail, and more amendments are promised to come.

Oh wow, another thing to talk about! (in Norwich this Monday, a few tickets left here – norwichartscentre.co.uk/event/green-...)

The gov't has unveiled plans to make further cuts to PIP & Universal Credit. Its impact assessment shows the changes are likely to lead to 250,000 more adults & 50,000 children being pushed into poverty by 2030.

This isn't right. We've written to the Minister for Work & Pensions urging a rethink.

The sum of the two DWP impact assessments and the OBR forecasts looks like:

- 250,000 more people in poverty, 50,000 of them kids
- one in five of all households that have a disability losing on average about £1,700 a year gross
- 150,000 unpaid carers losing carer's benefits
