I have also coined Atterbury's Law: If a system is working to the benefit of all concerned, somewhere nearby will be a small group of people working their absolute hardest to find ways to fuck it up.

What im proud I did in 2025:

* A great many storytelling performances. (Y’know, work!)
* Showing up.
* Running a years worth of free storytelling workshops in London.
* Only eating quality junk food.
* Loving the wonder, weirdness and curiosity of human stories. #newyear #oldyear

Going to start my book The Wasteland: A Biography of a Poem. But first, I'm going to listen to The Wasteland, read by Robert Speaight. Not sure when the record is from, but this Speaight cat died in 1974, so a while back. Spoken word vinyl is the best.

Didn't realise this was Martin Parr. If you feel like being happy, watch this 20min documentary on the gloriously unchanging Teddy Gray's sweet factory in Dudley. How they make Humbugs and rock will blow your prefrontal cortex like a 3 amp fuse.

Well worth reading. Imagine what this piece of shit is like behind closed doors.

Still got coffee though.

Grey, grey morning.

I watched A Few Good Men for the first time last night. Really enjoyed it, but the baseball thing to make Tom Cruise's character quirky was annoying and the bit the whole ending needed of Jack Nicholson suddenly blurting something specific was silly.

Just for the hell of it, I didn't pre heat the oven to bake this loaf, stuck it in cold and gave it an extra five minutes. Seems fine.

Oh Christ, 90s Brighton where people (men) at parties would tell you they were "a DJ" with gravitas and then pause for a reaction like they'd just cured cancer.
Grown men who think they're DJs & own 'decks', announcing "i'll bring my decks!" at parties are the man baby equivalent of toddlers shouting "Look At Me Mummy! I'm Really Good On The Swings!" Genuine believing they're talented musicians. Very very cringe.

My nephew is training to become a primary school teacher. He's been telling me some insane stories. One child collects Henry Hoovers. He has 37 Henry Hoovers in the family attic. Also Henry schoolbag and clothes. I am tempted by a Henry though, I hate buying vacuum cleaners and they do last.

My Christmas chocolate strategy has been to cane it all in one day. I believed it to be the healthiest option at the time.

How I'm walking out of 2025
December 27, 2025 at 4:48 PM
One of those days where families all go for a walk together, ten abreast across the entire promenade, as though being outdoors among other people is something new to them.

It’s a beautiful day in the Land of Song. The sky is blue, the sun is shining, and I’m in my dressing gown watching Clash of the Titans.

Yeah? Well go and put it on and THEN come back and try and criticise. #nowplaying

Have a peaceful half a sunrise from 40 mins ago. Trigger warning, it finishes before it's fully up so if you didn't like the ending to Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, be prepared.

I don't know if it's a contrarian view, but I think sunrise might actually look better when there's a few clouds around to keep the sky blue and bounce the light about. This just looks like a nearby star on an orange horizon and you can get that on any planet.

Pre sunrise coffee.

It's lovely to see everyone, but this is my favourite part of Christmas: as far away from Christmas as you can get.

My sister in law is a chef, so it goes without saying that her kitchen cookbook shelf is something to behold.

My nephew is the Earl of Gloucester this year in the traditional family play of King Lear.
