The ice inside this fallen tree was in the form of little balls.

I think it is because beetle larva eat round holes in the tree, and those fill up with water.

These look like Hemitrichia clavata to me. The milky to light pink early stage is what I know from them. Then the droplet shape, and next the tops pop off. At that point they have a champagne glass shape with a ball of hair out the top.
Hemitrichia clavata sporangia. At the bottom brown droplet shaped closed ones, and at the top with the lid popped off and balls of yellow fuzz showing. Assumed Hemitrichia calyculata sporangia. They have the same yellow fuzz but the cups are lower and shallower.
