Our colleagues at Eater still need our help! If you can chip in, or if you know someone who can help, or if you just want to spread the word, we'll be so grateful!

Our Eater GoFundMe is up! We all know this has been a difficult year for Vox, but the folks at Eater have been extremely dedicated in their support for each of their colleagues, past and present. Let's support them now!!! #unionstrong #voxunion #1u

Screenshot of a vox media union logo over the Eater logo. The heading reads, "Eater isn't essential without journalism." Screenshot (condensed for Bluesky word limit):

On August 8, without warning, Vox Media laid off 15 members of Eater, Punch, and Thrillist, the award-winning food, drink, and travel news and recommendation sites, while management celebrated Eater’s 20th anniversary. The cuts decimated local coverage, including Chicago, the country’s third-largest market.

This is the second restructuring at Eater in less than 10 months. The cuts come not only one month after the Vox Media Union ratified its new collective bargaining agreement, but also two months after the James Beard Awards, where Eater and Punch earned four nominations and two wins.

The firings came a week after Jim Bankoff claimed in an interview there would be no imminent layoffs. Eater says farewell to a cohort of award-winning and dedicated journalists who fought tooth and nail to keep the wall between editorial and advertising intact. We sound like a broken record, but we are once again grateful to have bargained for industry-leading severance language in our latest contract.

This GoFundMe is organized by members of the Vox Media Union. All funds raised will directly benefit union members impacted by the August 7 layoffs, and will be distributed in equal shares to those who opt-in to receive funds. The organizers will be reaching out to those impacted in the coming days with details.

Our union is committed to supporting our colleagues who were laid off, and will hold management accountable for how these layoffs were conducted. With these funds, we hope to ease the financial burden that these layoffs have placed on our colleagues some of who face mounting medical bills and are charged with being their family's primary caretakers.

The Vox Media Union layoff fund is being overseen by a committee of Vox Media Union members, including Ashok Selvam, Jaya Saxena, and Amy McCarthy. The fund will operate transparently, with full accounting of all donations that are received and distributed.

Less than 3 months ago, Vox Media was celebrating Eater for having nabbed 6 nominations at the James Beard Media Awards!

Ashok Selvam received the 2025 Local Voice Award for his work at Eater Chicago. He was laid off today.

Gutting a vertical that was just being celebrated across the company. There are so many talented writers available, some company is going to get very lucky.

Eater layoffs statement

Today, 15 members of the Vox Media Union working at Eater were notified without warning that their jobs were being eliminated as part of a major restructuring of the 20-year-old brand. This was especially shocking considering that Vox Media CEO Jim Bankoff told Puck’s Dylan Byers just last week that he did not anticipate any impending layoffs at the company. But, of course, we’ve learned that we cannot trust Jim Bankoff’s word when it comes to layoffs.

This is the second major round of layoffs at Eater this year, following a round earlier this year that decimated Eater’s award-winning cities network. To be abundantly clear: these layoffs are a gut-job, one that eliminates roughly a third of Eater’s union jobs. It is also a cowardly capitulation to the fallacious insistence that generative AI is the future of search and publishing. We are devastated that our colleagues have lost their jobs, and we are deeply worried about the future sustainability of Eater without them. Eater is currently in the midst of celebrating its 20th anniversary, and right now, there is not much to celebrate.

We will have more information forthcoming about ways to support our laid-off colleagues in the coming days.

Solidarity forever,

The Vox Media Union Committees

We have so far been unable to reach a deal with Vox Media that includes fair pay, AI protections, competitive benefits, improved severance and layoff procedures.

Should we not reach a fair contract tonight, our 250-member @VoxMediaUnion.bsky.social has overwhelmingly authorized a strike. ⏰ @vox.com

We are devastated and outraged about today's layoffs, the sale of Polygon, and the loss of staff across Polygon and NY Mag. We stand with our colleagues at @polygon.com com and @nymagunion.bsky.social in solidarity.
Today, the Vox Media Union learned the devastating news that Polygon, home to some of gaming and geek culture’s most beloved and respected journalism, is being sold off to controversial website Valnet. As part of the sale, nearly all of Polygon’s award-winning staff were laid off. Our colleagues at New York Magazine saw additional layoffs today as well.

To say that we are outraged and heartbroken is an understatement. This marks the fifth round of layoffs at Vox Media-owned brands in a six-month period. It has occurred during contract bargaining in which the company has thus far rejected all of the union’s economic proposals, and refuses to offer meaningful counters. This move not only disrespects our colleagues, it blatantly undermines a good-faith bargaining process.

Arguably even more demoralizing is Vox Media’s decision to sell a lauded games website to a company known for alleged exploitative conditions and for devaluing rigorous journalism in favor of churning out content. Vox Media’s lack of respect for Polygon’s reputation in games media, the hard work and passion of its staff, and the robust community of gamers and fans who support it could not be clearer. Losing Polygon to such a company is not just a loss for Vox Media, but for our industry and internet culture as a whole. From a sustainability perspective, it makes little financial or long-term sense, and speaks to a lack of care and consideration for this company and its staff.

The Writers Guild of America East and Vox Media Union will continue to offer help and support to our colleagues at Polygon and New York who are leaving us, just as we have supported our colleagues impacted by previous layoffs around the company. Please stay tuned for more information on how you can support those impacted by these layoffs. We will continue the fight for economic protections and job security in bargaining, where we set new standards for workers in the entire digital media industry.

We stand with you all.

@nymagunion.bsky.social also had members impacted by layoffs at Vox today. We stand with @voxmediaunion.bsky.social and all our comrades at Polygon.

What happened with Polygon today is so fucked. Vox Media has made some atrocious decisions in my six years here but this is really something else. And to do this in the middle of us bargaining a new union contract, where they scold us for asking for better protections, is just unconscionable.

📣📣WE HAVE A DEAL!📣📣

Last week, @nymagunion.bsky.social reached a tentative agreement with New York Magazine and Vox Media. We could not be prouder of our members who made it clear they were ready to withhold their labor if Vox Media didn’t meet them with a fair contract.
WE HAVE A DEAL
nymagunion.bsky.social
Solidarity with our colleagues at SB Nation who were impacted by this latest round of layoffs.
voxmediaunion.bsky.social
We are extremely disappointed with SB Nation's decision to layoff staff at its popular YouTube hub Secret Base. Not only is this a blow to a talented team, it undercuts the creator-driven and subscription-driven models of sustainability that Vox Media has been trying to cultivate. We must do better.
Today, the Vox Media Union learned three members at SB Nation’s Secret Base team have been let go, marking the third consecutive month of layoffs at Vox Media-owned brands.

As we and our colleagues at New York Magazine continue to make strides for our workers through bargaining, the company continues its death-by-a-thousand-cuts approach. These short-sighted actions from management have gutted our newsrooms and added to the ongoing uncertainty in the media industry. It is devastating to these individuals, and to our remaining staff, who are given few answers as to how downsizing is a sustainable practice moving forward.

Secret Base has been creator-led and personality-driven from its inception, exemplified by their successful community-funded Patreon, Top Secret Base. It will not be the same without these hard-working, experienced, smart, talented, and exceptionally creative employees. It is insulting to them for the company to describe these cuts as “necessary.”

The Writers Guild of America East and Vox Media Union will do everything we can to help and support the colleagues who are leaving us, just as we have supported our colleagues impacted by previous layoffs around the company. We continue the fight for transparency, equity, and protections in bargaining, where we set new standards for workers in the entire digital media industry.
