So nobody in the entire Southern Command has stood up and said "I won't do this!"? As a three decade military servant to this nation I am amazed. Highly likely that many of those officers will get a chance to explain their actions in a courts martial or international tribunal.

"Leave no survivors" is a directive to execute a warcrime. By any measure, the SecDef must be held accountable as the one who gave that order. I did almost three decades in uniform and never have I heard the like.

National Guard aren’t ICE or Border Patrol. They didn’t sign up looking to harass and repress people. They’re volunteers, part time, in case of emergency. They didn’t ask for this.

If they get a soldier that refuses a possibly illegal order they will hide it. They'll just send him/her back to the rear and then figure out how to chapter them out. Taking any legal action will spread like wildfire, sending Jimmy home not so much.

Here's how it will work: Soldier refuses an order he considers illegal. Commander offers non-judicial punishment which the soldier declines. Then the whole command leadership gets involved and decides if this goes to a courts martial. Soldier gets high powered attorney. News gets involved. Fun.

Does everybody understand that congress only works T-Th and sometimes less? They get the bookend days for travel with most leaving town Thursday as early as they can get away with. Full salary and benefits for 3/5s work. Nice gig if you can get it.
