If you ever want to feel old, try listing things to six year olds that they could do for fun, instead of watching Youtube or playing computer games…

My youngest (6) was studying IT today at school:

“…so we went on the tablet and searched for ‘IT’; and got lots of pictures of a scary clown…”.

As a teacher I am regularly encouraged (by various sources) to engage in research-informed practice & self-development.

Accessing actual academic research is very difficult because most of it is behind paywalls.

I want my practice to be research informed but the system blocks me.

There are odd moments with #duolingo where the distance from American English to British English is further than the latter is from French… (e.g. soccer / football / football vs football / american football / football américain).

There’s something about Belfast that makes it particularly productive for poetry.

Perhaps:
- Scale (population, footprint, buildings) [small enough to be relatable, big enough to contain multitudes and have no local alternative centres]
- Uni + industry
- Urban + hills and water
- […]

Just went to a writing workshop at Graves Art Gallery run by Rosie Carnall, using the art as prompts. It was exceptionally well facilitated and very productive: I think I have the bones (at least) of two new poems, plus some useful exercises to reuse.

Last boost: a chart showing premier league players as a scatter plot of goals per 90 mins and assists per 90 minutes (names scaled by minutes played).

Haaland is so far off the scale he’s above the title…

Off to see Ride at the Leadmill tonight - so have been watching various videos about the prehistory of shoegaze.

And only now do I realise what connects so many apparently varied 'essential' recommendations from my friend at uni (who was something of a music mentor)... <<They are all […]

@TwoClownsEating Just wanted to congratulate you on the radio show name from the other night ('For sale, sun cream, never used'). 'Hang it in the Louvre', as they say.

The bit I heard (before life intervened) was ace music, too...

Re last boost - I'm not having a particular 'go' at those examples, but I agree with the broad sentiment...

(as a general rule [almost] any art that *is* created is better than art that isn't - even a one star review is better than the 'no stars' of something that wasn't made...).

What are the most important/influential #maths #books of the 21st century

This is a very loose question, I know. That's intentional: I'd like to see how people interpret things like "important", "influential", and even "maths" and "book".

Given that, an explanation with your chosen […]

In #CoreMaths I like to start the year with a lesson on using news articles to do some estimation or data calculations, to get the students talking and thinking about "real world" maths. Here are some recent news stories that I'm planning on using this year:

Stating my response to a post in very general terms (and therefore probably subtooting lots of others too!):

a) people are varied
b) there are lots of people
so
c) there are a non-negligible number of people who do/say/believe non-standard things

therefore:

d) any story/comment that focuses […]

My author copy of a book I contributed to arrived today, which was nice.

(Actually I’m dreading rereading it b/c so much has changed that I wonder how well what we wrote stands up now, but I trust the editors, so it *should* be fine…?)

The HMIFRCS police reports are hilarious, because they're like 'record-keeping: terrible! Victim support: outstanding!' and it's like, how are you possibly measuring the latter if the former is true?
The Met Police's inspection report isn't exactly glowing.
