We develop amazing attachments to place. It took me years to work up the courage to take my kids to visit the farm I grew up on (we left there just as I hit my teens).

As for the tote, we have a very scruffy one at home. It makes me think about work!

Thoughts with you.

I spy an @themerl.bsky.social tote bag there!

It’s book publication day for #GhostsoftheFarm! It’s been a lifetime’s companionable & instructional haunting, & I’m thrilled to bring these women from out the shadows, honour them & raise & address my own rural ghosts. Love & thanks to @chelseagreenbooks.bsky.social & my early readers too x

This fine point is why I will never completely discount retrospective diagnosis. But to be fair to the wise historians who criticise it, this its value is rarely in producing better histories and much more about emphasising how the past can be mobilised in the present. Or indeed weaponised.

People say "autism never used to exist" and then you go to the Natural History Museum and the exhibit has a caption like "Born in 1762, The Revd [name] was famously irascible, steadfast in his routine, and dedicated his life to collecting 25,000 rare beetle specimens".

Fundamentally, the headbanging Right doesn't believe Autism (or ADHD) exists. Or in so far as it does exist, a human conspiracy has created it.

We're back to their core outlook that 'It didn't exist back in the good old days so can't exist now.'

'It must just be some modern woke Marxist nonsense'.

I think we spoke briefly about the Wilderness at Whiteknights (please don’t judge my nonsense Katy - any rubbish I might spout is mine and mine alone!). :-)

Also, teach-outs are a brilliant idea. Maybe we should host teach-outs at The MERL?!
olliedouglas.bsky.social
Is this impact?! Thanks for listening.

The book is brilliant. An absolute must read!

This one’s a good one. I would say that, of course, but @katrinanavickas.bsky.social is brilliant and her new book is a must read! Thanks as always to the brilliant @joevaughan.net.

Brilliant. Paging @joevaughan.net for future potential podcastery!

As I said to Jane, it would be amazing to get one of you on our podcast at some point to talk about the project and to highlight any juicy rural micro histories you have come across (that last bit is wishful thinking on my part, but someone has to be handing on their livestock, surely!)

I just spotted that he was seated beside the Prime Minister at the state banquet. Wealth and influence.

He giveth and he taketh away. But by the sound of things, mostly taketh.

Is this the same Schwarzman who paid for the big new Humanities centre in Oxford?

Another crossover would be awesome. I propose a movie or console game:

A dystopian future in which a small but dedicated band of (mutant) historians in spandex attempt to collect a record of agricultural change but are thwarted by a sinister regime hellbent on controlling (mutants and) heritage.

Looking at the wills and inventories from the 16th century and came across this item "Item ix pere of shites xs". Pretty sure it refers to sheets but you never know...
olliedouglas.bsky.social
During a fascinating chat I got my recent will-related socials confused and told her I thought I had seen the project sharing an amusing message about ‘shites’. Turns out it was @tudorfarming.bsky.social!
