So, nearly five years since my last cycle tour holiday - early in the pandemic in 2020, between lockdowns, from Bordeaux to Carcassonne - I’ve finally organised the next one. In May I’m going to cycle from Nevers in the upper Loire, following the river or its Lateral Canal down to Orléans

I wonder what he’d have called his dog if he was a proctologist?

What’s your excuse? “Events, dear boy, events”?

What puzzles me is that it probably wouldn’t even cost much - Thames is functionally bankrupt, and they could just say No to their bleating for price hikes or pollution derogations, and watch it go into administration. McQuarie at al have already made a shit-ton of money out of it.

Perhaps the big breweries or their lobbyists, who presumably are the ones who have ministers’ ears, think this is a good idea, but I’ll bet the licensees don’t - it’s longer hours probably for no more money, and even more staffing issues.

Read thd article. It is intended to stop people *driving* in - limiting parking is a well-tested way of doing that. Also well tested is the notion that the city is more attractive to *people* if there are fewer *cars*.

Personally I think the German city of Hamburg should demand they all cease using the term for a product which wasn’t invented in or by the town.

When JFK announced that “Ich bien ein Berliner” he was telling his German audience that he was a donut.
And a hamburger never did contain ham - it was a ground beef sandwich carried as a packed lunch by American bomber crew on bombing raid over Hamburg (hence the name) in the 1940s.

I see that most of the "OMG Javier Milei has performed an economic miracle in Argentina OMG I Heart Maggie" crowd - predictably, since it did the same with Lis Truss - has switched to "tEh PrObLeM iS MiLEi wOz NoT fRee mArKet eNouGh".

How many times must these utter fools fail before they get it?

All sounds a bit Cultural-Revolutionary.
And we all know how that went.

Lords Heseltine & Kinnock seem more alive to these self-evident truths than most members of the Commons. Similarly, I find thinkers with direct lived experience of far right dictatorship, Greeks of a certain age for example, crystal clear about what’s happening now.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.

At least I’m not painting St George crosses on roundabouts.

Anecdata may be the lived experience of one person - you. Data on the other hand is scientifically collected and evaluated lived experience of many hundreds or thousands of subjects. As a science graduate and former accountant I know which I prefer.
