I'd argue it's worse than a blank page, in the same way that garment pieces cut slightly off the grain are worse than not having cut yet.

When a thing is wrong, it will suck your energy into making it Less Wrong, which is often not the same as making it right.
Just a thing about this: a common statement in writing is that you can fix crap, but you can't fix a blank page.

I have heard AI apologists claim that this is why it's fine to generate a first draft.

Now, to be clear, fuck this.

But also: an AI draft is a fucking blank page.
I know I don’t talk about writing much. It is because I am writing so slowly.

But I want you to know that I am taking a part of this story that absolutely sucked and took me months to produce four of the worst chapters I have ever written and in the edit I figured out how to fix it.

a big part of the issue surrounding the use of chatgpt/LLMs in academic research comes down to process vs. product. a lot of us know that the process of doing research matters because that's where intellectual work is done; but some "academics" and lots of techies only care about a fast product

I don't want to "save time." I want to go down research rabbit holes that make hours mysteriously disappear, until I pop out again having learned something fascinating that I can't wait to breathlessly recount to others.
"but it'll save time!" i actually...don't care? lol. the genAI evangelists overestimate how much the people who chose to do research for a living (before chatgpt even existed) value "saving time." i'd rather do research well than do it quickly. i'd rather write an award-winning book than a fast book

Reminder: resolutions can be fun! You can resolve to try a new cheese every week, eat all the weird fruits you’ve been curious about at the grocery store, or commit to watching 12 different classic films.

Why make crappy resolutions when you can make happy ones

Spousal Unit: Are you using dog scissors to cut my hair?!?

Me: No, these are people scissors!

Spousal Unit: Then why does the sheath say "Miracle Coat?"

Me: 😳😳😳 Oops!

[In my defense, they are much better scissors than the cheap ones that came with the hair clipper set...]

A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

People who claim to be scholars are on here saying it’s fine to let AI summarize a book for you as if the research isn’t the work, as if the reading isn’t the way your brain makes connections, as if conversation with other ideas isn’t the way you create new ways of seeing

Spousal Unit: Less Hair?

Me: Less Hair!

I have finished the terrible project. I have met the goal and the timeline.

I may need some Coquito as a reward.
