Slowly but steadily translating this french monograph using google and it's a really good read... why aren't we in the era where we can just download languages into our brain yet, I wish I were able to read this in its original french!!

I have totally forgotten about this account... Only just back after a week-long workshop that was held immediately a week after an expedition! Excited to start working on the samples collected but boy do I need some sleep.

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

Another folder of never-before seen Aliens dives has been sorted, and I present you with a collage of B-listers that would otherwise go unloved - this time from 9-13 May, 2024.
Have fun zooming in!

It can be hard to get sense of scale in the deep sea. Galiteuthis phyllura might look like your average cranchiid, but they are BIG, with an estimated maximum mantle length of 2.7m!

It shouldn't be all that surprising that they are in the same family as the colossal squid.

When chanchitos fly, it happens 2,340 meters deep in the Ocean! This is a sea pig, or chanchito, if you’re a member of the #Uruguaysub200 science team. Scotoplanes sp. is a genus of deep-sea sea cucumbers of the family Elpidiidae. 🎥ROV SuBastian / Schmidt Ocean Institute

Clearly amazing appearance around 888m in #MarDelPlataCanyon: Amphitretus sp. This telescope octopus has adapted to live in a place where there is nowhere to hide but in plain sight. Deep gratitude to @autsquidsquad.bsky.social for species ID. Description on Insta: www.instagram.com/reel/DNittGh...

We’re deeply disappointed negotiations for a global plastics treaty have ended without a final agreement.
Over the past 3 years, the momentum has been undeniable. The world now understands, plastic is a full lifecycle problem that demands systemic solutions, & that its health impacts are profound.

Can tropical corals find refuge at higher latitudes under future warming? In our new paper in Science Advances, we argue that coral range expansion will be *far too slow* for most coral species to outpace climate change. 🪸🌊
