I want to reiterate my deeply held belief. One of the biggest mistakes we are making with this tech is anthropomorphizing it and treating it like it is actually "reasoning". It's not doing that. And it cannot be held accountable. It's a machine.

make art! if it's the end of the world, you might as well make art! if it's not the end of the world, then the future will be better because people made art right now!

💯
A lot of people think the world can be made better by identifying the bad people and making them suffer in exactly the ways that we suffer. I understand that urge. It may bring some kind of catharsis. But we all need to understand that it doesn't actually *solve* anything.

Hey y’all, I’ve been thinking about how fast things changed for all Latiné people in LA. And what I’ve personally done to protect myself and my family. I thought it might be helpful for some of you so thought I’d share. 🧵

So, as I said, I’ve thinking about how we design markets and experiment with something different.

My hope is for new markets ruled by a different set of values which *minimize harm and maximize collective good.*

I believe this is what we want to exist after capitalism.

So I’ve been thinking a lot about markets lately, hoping to experiment with something within a closed system.

Something designed with care and intention, based on lessons learned in community for the last two decades, and rooted in *mutualism.*

The mutualistic sector is the space where labor organizations, mutual aid societies, and coops have operated for decades.

Its support has been hollowed out over the past several decades, and it's time to reinvest here.

😅 It hurts so bad everywhere in the beginning but bodies are insanely adaptable.

Over time, the hurt comes to be a signal that you’re making progress.

True story: I fucking hate working out. But my body rewards me for it greatly 🔥

Now it feels weird when I go too long without exercise.
it's my time to assert I don't understand exercise.

It hurts.

And then the next day, you still hurt. Why would I do that again?

This thread is on point.

Even though :::waves arms::: ALL OF THIS is happening in areas we cannot directly control, it’s a great time for each of us to get clear on power structures in the organizations, communities, and groups we’re part of and practice democracy with intention.

We are at the beginning of a massive labor movement. IT IS A NEGOTIATION.

And it’s not just what the leaders of unions and corporations do, it’s also what each of us do every day — what we say, what we buy, what we pay attention to, what we show up for…

A new model for reciprocity is being born.

Discussing this with the showrunner of “Foundation” was a highlight of the month ✨
A very wise woman helped me understand that many of us have been trying to *prevent* the dark times, but we can’t because we have already been in the dark times for quite a while.

Our job now is to *shorten* the dark times and lay the groundwork for what world we want to exist AFTER.

I would call it “governance” vs politics, but I agree with the idea that over time, a system of decision making also emerges within the group. 💯
hyl.st sōm @hyl.st · May 26
Culture, markets and *politics* are fundamental to groups of humans. If anything I would politics underpins markets: who you trade with, what you're willing to trade, and *how* these decisions get made are all politics.

Politics *is* group decision making.
When you put humans together for an extended amount of time, two things naturally rise: culture and markets.

Culture because the mix of people will share some mixture of experiences, beliefs, ideas that eventually give rise to what’s encouraged / acceptable and what’s discouraged / unacceptable.

It's time to bring back the commons. When we enclose and privatize everything, we incentivize the values and norms of extraction and oppression. Markets that rely on bartering and common use/ownership incentivize values and norms for collaboration, cooperation and community

Culture and markets are two basic elements that arise naturally from human behavior.

Culture is what develops as our norms, behaviors, ways of being.

Markets develop as a formal way to meet human needs, and how we give or take collectively.
