“But Rocky and Bullwinkle and Underdog were still distributed by the Program Exchange!“ Oh, the Program Exchange? The barter syndicator? The one that provides programs to TV channels for free in exchange for General Mills ads? THAT program exchange?

And Voltron was completely MIA, sizzle reel or otherwise! For a channel about exploiting Classic Media‘s retro library, they really didn’t exploit the retro library that well.

Alright, I won’t know rerun channels too much.

But I’ll say this- PBJ didn’t air as many reruns as they should.

Where were Rocky and Bullwinkle? Underdog? Felix the Cat? Gumby? They were on the sizzle reel, but not the channel!

I know a couple of soap operas have FAST channels too. General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful have them across many platforms. I'm surprised Sony hasn't launched FAST channels for Days of our Lives and Young and the Restless yet considering they have full intact libraries.

Yeah, if you want new content everyday, that's YouTube's, Twitch's & even Tiktok's arena. Old media wasn't built on endless churn, but endlessly valued IP. Even the relatively churny daily game, talk & variety shows all have active FAST channels. Maury, Price is Right & more, looping forever.

Also, 98% of what's on major cable networks even today are reruns.

95% of what's on SVOD streamers are reruns.

Four out of five of the biggest shows on streaming are reruns. Some decades old.

The biggest thing on Tubi right now? Looney Tunes.

Biggest show on Peacock? Gunsmoke. I'm not kidding.

They could have easily rechristened the OTA channel NBC Family or some nonsense and be seen in every major media market with a wider footprint.

And don't knock rerun channels.

You DO know basically ALL major diginets are rerun channels and have strong viewership nationwide.

Including MeTV Toons.

True, but I feel if NBCU really wanted to, they could have bought out Luken's stake in PBJ, expand it across their O&Os, and have an outlet that would have brought in families where they could expand programming for an audience seemingly abandoned by NBC for decades.

I'd be better than LX.

To play devil's advocate here, PBJ was a rerun channel that aired almost exclusively on low-power affiliates in the middle of nowhere and couldn't even breach 10% of households. It was practically a mercy kill at this point

Also, consider spatchcocking the turkey, especially if you have a convection oven. It takes work, but it cooks faster (or gives a chance for your ill-thawed bird to cook more evenly,) and the result is juicy and delicious. Just get ready to put your whole weight on that bird, maybe even cleaver it:

You could make a whole documentary with all of NBCU's attempts at kid blocks and networks

- Universal Family Entertainment Network
- USA Cartoon Express and Action Extreme Team
- Sci-Fi Cartoon Quest/Animation Station
- Qubo
- KidsCo
- Syfy Kids
- Sprout
- Universal Kids
- DreamWorks Channel

They could have filled up the schedule with older NBCU shows like they did on KidsCo, but the US kid market isn't as receptive to reruns of cancelled shows, especially pre-HD shows, as the markets KidsCo was in. (Just ask the Hub.)

And you can't launch a new kids block with only one show.

K-9 was clearly meant to be a Syfy Kids US launch program, but the launch fell through and they were contractually obligated to air the show anyway.

As for why it fell through? K-9 was the only show of this nature around this time, so it was probably the only show they managed to get.

Conspiracy theory: I think Syfy Kids Mark II was supposed to roll out in the states as well, as evidenced by Syfy randomly picking up kids series/unofficial Doctor Who spinoff K-9 and burning it off on Christmas 2012, followed by a few other airings in 2013, usually at 5 AM.

Syfy Kids Mark II wouldn't last long- KidsCo as a whole would shut down at the end of 2013 in Europe and early 2014 elsewhere, after NBCU took full control of Sprout.

But then in 2013, the brand launched for real, this time on KidsCo, in a rare case of NBCU contributing to the network. One original short series was produced, Zuzu and the Supernuffs, on a lineup including Back to the Future, The Mummy, DinoSquad, Di-Gata Defenders, and even Earthworm Jim.

This is also why the Syfy Kids logo was seen on De Blob 2. When THQ shut down, the cartoon was scrapped, and Syfy Kids attempt one never saw the light of day.

Originally announced in 2010, the original incarnation of Syfy Kids, was to launch with an animated series based on THQ's De Blob, as well as an animated series of shorts named "Dr. What" from Worldwide Biggies, which would appear on both the Syfy channel and the website..

Subject change, but there was another NBCU kids brand that just barely managed to get out there. After the launches of Qubo and KidsCo, but before they got their hands on Sprout and the dawn of Universal Kids, there was Syfy Kids.

What if they make five series, one for each hero, but when you overlap the files of each episode into each other it becomes a sentai series.

Sentai replacement idea: multiple tokusatsu series each focusing on a single hero, each hero is color coded and has their own run, and eventually you put them in a team, and make way too many multiverse related movies and wait a second

And speaking of which, I think WB might be a massive rival for Disney for the Fox/ABC Family purchase in this world, since Turner leaves them without a fully owned basic cable channel, with a much smaller kids library, and hungry for both. Questions, questions, questions!

Fun fact, I had to go through similar questions when asking what if Disney spun off Jetix Europe instead of absorbing it, or what if Fox kept Fox Family, because the Saban/BVS library gave Disney a direct line to Marvel and a massive Marvel library.
been crunching some numbers, and i think i know at least part of the reason why Disney ended up buying Marvel in 2009 out of all the other studios, despite not producing a single Marvel movie up until that point
