@hidive.com is on Bluesky, but here's a screencap from their Twitter account where they state what should feel obvious when it comes to the idea of using AI for anime translation & timing... but in today's world it's unfortunately not so obvious.

Good on Hidive, regardless.
"We get asked this question. So, here's our response:
'We don't use AI for subtitles. Every line is carefully timed and translated by real people (who cry during finales and debate Best Girls, just like you).'"

At best, they'll be sat on by banks until they're not underwater on them, at which point they'll return to active inventory, instead of direct assistance keeping people in homes while still propping up the system.

Like between subprime vehicle loans & the foreclosure rate spiking, this makes sense:

Yeah, the fact they'll end up on Amazon, just like bootlegs/knock-offs of stuff like flash media, is part of what makes it so tricky. If you can't trust something as high effort to spoof as USB drives & MicroSDs, DVDs are relatively low hanging fruit. Copy the official packaging & it slides by.
karlrolson.com
Yeah, mass produced bootlegs basically existed from the inception of the DVD medium, and they've only gotten a lot better at making knock offs over the past 25+ years. They've gone from easy to spot to needing to look at the authoring as was done in the video.

There's a time line where this is Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka supposedly. (SA passed on the buyout offer Reddit eventually took allegedly.)

There's no way it wouldn't be a more interesting album if it was about Deadblow or Blendo.

Today in Discord, this remix of a Simpsons quote:

"It won't last. Brothers and sisters are natural enemies! Like Jocks and Nerds! Or Preps and Nerds! Or Cheerleaders and Nerds! Or Nerds and other Nerds! Damn Nerds! They ruined Computers!" - Sys Admin Willie

But, I guess if he could lay low, he'd have let the "Like That" verse slide. However, he couldn't let it go, and so gave Kendrick the superbowl & permanent cultural relevance instead, then underlined that with a court case. Unhinged behavior. Maximum self-sabotage.

Kind of wild to think about how if Drake had laid low after "Not Like Us" & just done the releases he's been doing, he'd probably have shaken it off. Now it's a legal decision. He'll still shake it off probably - Chris Brown still gets features. Still, he'd be farther along if he just laid low.

NEW: Federal judge dismisses Drake's defamation case against Kendrick Lamar storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
The issue in this case is whether "Not Like Us" can reasonably be understood to convey as a factual matter that Drake is a pedophile or that he has engaged in sexual relations with minors. In light of the overall context in which the statements in the Recording were made, the Court holds that it cannot.

I would think of any audience that would have an anime-fandom like obsession with definitive editions, Trek fans would be in that number.
karlrolson.com
Also, to be fair, they're also doing full Blu-ray releases of the HD remasters, so it's not like they aren't providing higher grade versions, and they wouldn't want an adjacent format undercutting that: www.amazon.com/Frasier-Comp...
karlrolson.com
I don't think so, I am seeing those different editions listed on amazon:
Frasier: www.amazon.com/Frasier-Comp...
DS9: www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-De...

That's to say that reissues can be both much cheaper yet much better - the format exists! Publishers like @discotekmedia.bsky.social use it often when the best master possible is only standard def, so it's the best that show can look, while only taking up one disc for an entire 26 episode season!
karlrolson.com
Watched the new @techconnectify.bsky.social extras video about DVD reissues & the part that guts me is there's a much better way for cheapskate studios to save money on reprints & it's called SD-BD, aka Standard-Def Blu-Ray. They fit much more data, even single layer & with newer, better codecs.
Some DVD re-releases got cheapened out in a weird way

The difference between good software and bad software is that when good software gets an update, you get excited. "oh, what did they improve?"
When bad software gets an update, you feel dread. "oh no, what did they fuck up this time?"

Don't play for this quarter's results, nor contextualize the cost of leading the way in a vacuum, as if something like that couldn't become a profit center in & of itself. Make everyone chase you, don't lead from behind when there's an obvious opening to lap the competition.
karlrolson.com
If the thrust of your streaming platform is that it's the best place for watching a subtitled medium, it's a natural business sideline to then build an industry-leading subtitling & playback engine that is so good, your competitors would want to licence it, not to replace that with something worse.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.
