MAYBE this Kickstarter will beat $2.7 million, but I seriously doubt by much. Look, I want to be wrong on this, maybe I am, but the new Kickstarter feels bare bones, they're making so few actual promises, and they don't need your money. This is about the narrative.

Make a Kickstarter that simply *cannot* fail with a super low goal. I'm already seeing people say "it's succeeding where Joel failed, Joel was right to give it up" when it's only at $1 million, barely more than a third than the failed Kickstarter had pledged.

But I'm starting to think its about the narrative. Joel/Gizmoplex MST3K, with all its new stuff, struggles, putting Shout in a position to acquire the brand. Shout doesn't fund MST3K, buys it out from Joel, THEN funds it. Sell a new version through Rifftrax as a retro throwback. Sci-Fi Era is back!

I'm sure the Kickstarter money will still go into new episodes, polish things up a bit, but all reports indicate to me that this Kickstarter is superfluous. So what's it there for? Marketing, sure, everybody's talking about it...

And the Kickstarter goal is *microscopic*. $20,000 would cover just the puppets, maybe. And that's because it's pretty much already fully funded by Shout. According to Variety, "the episodes will be produced regardless of the fundraising total."

Cut to less than three weeks later. Mike Nelson, who kept pretty arms length from MST3K during the Gizmoplex era, and Rifftrax announce this partnership with Shout and launch the new Kickstarter. No list of movies, no writers room credits, no guest stars, no stretch goals.

One could assume that Shout opted not to cover Joel and the Gizmoplex, but that's behind closed doors, I don't know. What I do know is that the Gizmoplex era was about newer talent and a new art style in front of the camera. Opinions on the era regardless, if was trying to have its own identity.

$2.7 million is, it should be said, more than the initial goal for the first Netflix season. So the fan support is there, but inflation has killed the momentum. Production stalls, future seems uncertain, cut to a few weeks ago with Joel selling the remaining rights to Shout's parent company.

Maybe I'm getting a little too tinfoil hit on this, but here's why the new MST3K Kickstarter is sitting weird with me. 🧵

So, Joel and the Gizmonic team fail to fund S14. I think this is entirely do to their own mismanagement and inflated goals, though they still get $2.7 million in pledges.

The Kennedy Center isn’t closing for “renovations.” It’s closing because audiences fled, artists withdrew, and its reputation collapsed under the pressures forced upon it. Cultural trust doesn’t evaporate by accident. It happens when power treats the arts as a tool, not a public good.
