Academics take one headshot at the start of their career and then use it for the next 40 years.

A great and informative discussion of peer review. I have too many opinions to go into depth here.

My general solution is to better value, in all senses, both peer and editorial review. If peer review was formally counted as work by an academic that might encourage more engagement.

Folks on Bluesky who use RStudio - I have a student who for has had no issue using it for the past few months but all of a sudden RStudio has been crashing basically everytime after immediately opening and doing anything in RStudio (clicking a button, running code). Has this happened to anyone else?

Did you know that since 1999 an independent group of global experts called the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has been providing WHO evidence-based recommendations on #vaccines?
What is the Strategic advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE)? Provides independent, evidence-based recommendations on vaccines. Established in 1999. SAGE recommendations consider public health impact, cost-effectiveness, programmatic feasibility, and equity. They ensure that vaccines work in real-world settings and reach those who need them the most. Thanks to expert advice from SAGE, WHO’s vaccine policies help give children lasting protection against serious diseases like measles, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough; giving parents confidence their
child is protected. WHO regularly reviews evidence and ensures vaccine policies reflect the latest science. In fact, SAGE bases its recommendations
only on publicly available evidence
that is carefully assessed and validated using internationally recognized methods.

This week, we lost a leading scientist. Prof Amilcar Tanuri, who died with 67 years after leading the scientific response to Zika, HIV, COVID-19 and multiple other epidemics in Brazil. I was so fortunate to have Prof Tanuri as a mentor and friend for over 3 decades. Rest in peace my friend.

Teaching help request!

I have a clinician mentee for whom I think building out decision trees is the right research aim. While he gets the general idea, I don’t think he has ever been taught formal decision analysis. I was taught expected values so long ago I no longer remember how to teach it.

Why... always reviewer 2 😂?

The problem is... I have been editor of 4 journals (managed >300 submissions), with 2 different systems for managing. On my experience, reviewer # is usually "random" and based on acceptance, not on invitation. R2 madness is related to time to accept? Hesitance of COI?

Following rigorous assessment of the available scientific data, we find no evidence that taking paracetamol during pregnancy causes autism in children.
