When ProPublica’s @gingerthompson.bsky.social began talking to people in Albany, GA, she didn’t expect that they would be so fearful to criticize the town’s sole hospital on the record — or how powerless they were to hold that hospital to account.

Read our 5-part "Sick in a Hospital Town" series:
Sick in a Hospital Town: As Phoebe Memorial Grew, the Health of Albany, Georgia, Declined
The five-part series, “Sick in a Hospital Town,” pursues one question: Why are people in Albany so sick when its most powerful institution is a hospital?

A great virtue of Osita Nwanevu’s new book, "The Right of the People," is that it aims to define democracy in a precise and rigorous way so that it can become clear what it is and isn’t, at least by his lights.
How Can We Fix American Democracy?
Preserving our democracy is as urgent a task as ever, but the question is how.
