Susan Lipper’s photographic series Grapevine was shot over four years from 1988 to 1992.
The series takes its name from Grapevine Branch in West Virginia, a small community where Susan found herself for a while after graduating the Yale photography programme.

in our school district, they're 100% dedicated on ABA. the school our child is entering has a team of BCBAs that work with them, and while they seem like nice people, i'm very conflicted about it. we're honestly considering moving but that introduces other learning/social challenges.

agree completely. i don’t think ABA should be treated as a universal approach to autism, but I do struggle with the balance between rejecting it entirely and making sure autistic kids (especially nonverbal) get the same support and care to live rich, full lives as neurotypical kids do.

but because they're not neurotypical, teaching them can look different.

i agree, that’s not where I’m coming from. nonverbal kids can absolutely have rich, fulfilling lives. but if they’re not taught (like any other neurotypical kid) not to bite, we’re actually limiting their ability to live fully and safely in the world.

just discussing a topic i'm struggling with. not defending ABA but it seems like the pendulum can swing the other direction and we end up avoiding teaching autistic children, especially non-verbal children, basic skills and abilities.

don't all kids get taught not to bite?

now that the dust has settled on the kirk shooting and with the benefit of hindsight and the kimmel thing playing out i sure hope bluesky's leadership is asking itself why their mod team so instinctively behaved exactly the way this fascist administration wanted them to before even having been asked

and using an audience selector from Survey Monkey, which according to their website is itself an AI product.

just garbage at every step.

i don’t find cunt offensive. and if we’re talking about site dynamics, then scope and scale are what matters. otherwise the conversation isn't about what’s happening on the site, it’s just complaining about a user you don't like.

today it’s a critical piece about personhood, tomorrow it’s a netflix or EA product slotting this AI into their content in "a controversial move." and because we're primed to recognize it as a character the push goes down smoother.

this story can be covered without carrying their water for them.

every article that uses this AI program's "name" and "face" in the headline is 100% playing into the PR push. they don't give a shit about the tone of the coverage, they just want to make the name and face recognizable. this is patient-zero of making AI "actors" a thing.

this is 100% a PR push. printing the AI model's made-up "name" and "photo" in the headline gives the company what they want.

they don't give a shit about the content or tone of NPR's article, they just want people talking about the model as if it's a person, to make the name and face recognizable.

watching cities bulldoze significant landmarks and, as if to mock us, preserve some tiny fragment like a corpse mounted on display. feels more like set dressing than preservation. a hollow gesture to say "look, we care about history" while erasing the very thing that gave the neighborhood character.
rendering of the proposed apartments that will stand in the bulldozed remains of the historic Painted Bride building in philly. small remnants of the historic building appear to be affixed to the base of the apartment building.

i made a helpful reference
top right: a fractured black rectangle where one half is labeled "autism is bad" and the other side is labeled "FACT CHECK: autistic people are productive members of society".

top left:
WRONG
-negating their frame reinforces it
-starts with what it isn't instead of what it is
- your argument is shaped like their argument

bottom right: large image of Kirby, a pink blob inhaling and the "autism is bad" fragment, labeled THEY'RE DOING EUGENICS

bottom left:
RIGHT
- you eat their frame
-starts with what's actually happening
-contains and explains what they're doing
-your argument is shaped like kirby

pornography bans and censorships make no sense to me bc sexuality is quite literally part of being human.. suppressing that part or acting like it's gross is never going to be good, we've already been there, not even for teens who go through a lot of hormonal changes and should safely learn about it

there will be dozens of articles posted on x dot com this week about the dangers of a bluesky echo chamber
