I think this is the case. The process itself has turned the public against housing. The only way to express power is to imagine objections. We’ve been nudging the public to object. When the process is removed, they will actually feel less objectionable.

Ultimately the crowd was a lot less hostile than they would have been in previous years because there's nothing they can do to stop the proposal

BC lumber prices seem to be kind of normal?

Sacramento's golden Tower Bridge.

The pyramid in the background is where they interred Ronald Reagan's mummified remains.

These types of dense, walkable apartments are illegal near much of California's mass transit infrastructure.

Tell Governor Newsom to sign SB79

Turns out I stole this line. At least it's not the same building.

SB79 sounds like the best bill to come out of California for housing affordability yet; will be an inspiration for BC & other jurisdictions. If Governor Newsom doesn't sign it soon, I'll go to Sacramento myself to add to the popular pressure.

Reminder to please call the governor and ask him to sign SB 79

Probably dumb as hell to publish this on a Friday afternoon, but the clock is ticking to get @gavinnewsom.bsky.social to sign SB 79. Please share — and, if you're a Californian, please call the governor's office at (916) 445-2841 to ask for his signature. publiccomment.blog/p/newsom-s-f...

If your city isn't installing speed cameras and isn't installing monitors for excessively loud engines, you are letting criminals ruin your quality of life while leaving money on the table.

Out today! The Shoup Doctrine is a collection of essays honoring the life and legacy of Donald Shoup. It was a fantastic honor to be invited to contribute.

People worried about the sustainability of democracy will be tempted to celebrate Americans being down on the economy now. But I worry part of this is that countries are becoming ungovernable in the Tiktok age.
Driving the news: The new Axios Vibes survey by the Harris Poll shows 65% of Americans see themselves as either sometimes or regularly financially squeezed each month, up from 58% in June 2024.

Surveys with longer track records tell a similar story. The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index was 21.4% lower in September than a year earlier. It is now lower than at any point during the 2008-2009 recession.
The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index fell in September to 94.2, below the 98.7 recorded in June 2022 when inflation peaked.

Soon! I don't think I'll be able to brew them fresh this year though, which is a shame.

In the time since Vancouver Council voted to reallocate 10% of road space (which has gone nowhere), cities like Paris & London have practically transformed themselves, not to mention NYC's similar success with congestion pricing.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

Everyone take a moment to gloat over the FinTwit folks who claimed labor & supply chains make quantum leaps in multifamily housing production impossible

"What about teh lumber", they said. "What about teh labor", they said

Then NYC simply exploded to completion levels unseen since 1965

I think once the businesses move in and the handrail is gone it will look a lot different, almost articulated if it's a bunch of random shops with big colourful signs.
