Something you could also argue (with a few obvious caveats) about journalism. Newspapers were broadly viewed as conservative until the mid-60s, when George Wallace pioneered a strategy of “it’s not me, it’s them” when the (conservative) newspapers of Alabama had had enough of him.

When I was an undergrad in Ames, the bus wasn’t fully free (though they later experimented with that!), but it was free for anyone with a university ID. Being able to hop on a bus and get somewhere in town was great as a student. More free buses for everyone!!
