Now published in @agu.org Geophysical Research Letters!

What happens to marine archaea when they’re hungry? And what does that mean for the TEX₈₆ paleothermometer?

I hope a journalist on the climate beat will report on this - this may be only one piece of the general awfulness that is happening to federal science, but the NOAA Climate and Global Change Fellowship has trained many of the current leaders in weather and climate: cpaess.ucar.edu/cgc/current-...

This fellowship was a huge part of the reason I am continuing to do climate science, and it has supported so many incredible people. These effects on early-career researchers, who do some of the most impactful work, is going to have long-lasting implications for science and scientists.

As of today, all current NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellows have been furloughed due to the Dept of Commerce not releasing the funding for the program. In addition no new Fellows were awarded this year. cpaess.ucar.edu/cgc

The Trump assault on science is an assault on scientists - an assault on their careers and dreams, their lives and their families. It is a waste of training and talent. It impoverishes all of us.

The Dept of Commerce has forced the NOAA C&GC program (which supported my postdoc) to furlough their postdocs. Postdocs are at a precarious career stage - folks move across the country/world, often w/o much of a local support network

I was also a Fellow. This program brought me from my home country of Australia, providing me resources+networks that paved my career path to becoming a full professor in a US institution. Having now worked with many undergrad/grad/postdocs, I have witnessed CGC benefits to society at large.

One of the things that makes this Fellowship special is that unlike NSF fellowships it is open to non-citizens, with the aim of retaining climate science talent in the US. The furlough creates significant problems for non-US postdocs in how it complicates visa status 😳

I am one of the people who have been furloughed. And just to deal and prepare our backup plans for this unfortunate event is mentally taxing.

I hope that we are getting out of this series of unfortunate events soon.

The Secretary of Commerce's new policy requiring his personal review of all NOAA contracts over $100,000 is directly harming American science. 🧪

How do I know? Because this morning, twelve of America's rising leaders in climate science (including myself) were furloughed.

Another cool paper coming out of @amglab.bsky.social. Led by Tanja Wald, here we present basin-wide profiles of Mediterranean nitrate N/O isotopes, and show that this distribution can be explained by a combination of nitrogen fixation and anthropogenic nitrogen deposition: dx.doi.org/10.1029/2023...
Origins of the Nitrate 15N Depletion in the Mediterranean Sea
Basin-wide depth profiles of nitrate δ15N and δ18O indicate a supply of low-δ15N N to the Mediterranean Sea Nitrate δ15N can be explained by modest rates of N2 fixation and/or anthropogenic N dep...

With each passing day, this administration further degrades U.S. scientific capabilities. If we stop collecting climate data, it will not alter reality. It will make us less prepared to address the damage & pain human-induced, climate change generates. This does not make us great. 🧪🔌💡🌊 ☀️💨🔋
Dear Colleague,

The National Snow and Ice Data Center was informed yesterday that the Department of Defense (DoD) will cease processing and delivering the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data no later than 30 June 2025.

Impact on Data Products:
Since SSMIS data serve as input to the Sea Ice Index, this product will also stop processing by the same date.

What This Means For You:
Our records indicate that you use this dataset. Users should expect a gap in data availability during the transition to alternate sources. We understand this sudden change may significantly disrupt your operations and research.

Our Response:
We share your concern about this abrupt timeline and are actively evaluating possible alternative data sources, including AMSR2. We will communicate updates as soon as they become available.

AMSR2 Alternative:
Users may wish to explore the AMSR2 portion of the Near-Real-Time NOAA/NSIDC Climate Data Record of Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration. As documented in NSIDC Special Report #27, the AMSR2 data are a prototype and are not yet fully intercalibrated with the older data. Users will notice differences in sea ice extents because AMSR2’s higher resolution provides better ice edge detection than SSMIS. These data may serve as an interim alternative while we develop a fully intercalibrated version of AMSR2 for the Sea Ice Index.

We are committed to supporting you through this transition. Please reach out to nsidc@nsidc.org with any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,
NOAA@NSIDC

There have definitely been some significant changes to the NOAA Climate website "https://www.noaa.gov/climate" in the last 24 hours...

For example, removing links and references on the page to 'Climate Ready Nation' initiatives. Stripes are gone too.

Trump administration cuts to NSF will result in more than 200,000 FEWER people per year involved in basic science, training, and education - what should have been the next generation of US scientists. This isn't even eating your seed corn, it is setting your seed corn on fire and salting the earth.
