A study of nearly 300,000 people published today in the New England Journal of Medicine found “that last season’s 2024–2025 mRNA COVID vaccines reduced people’s risk of emergency department visits by 29 percent, their risk of hospitalizations by 39 percent and their risk of death by 64 percent.”

It’s a "crisis" when immigrants "take jobs away", but "innovation" when machines do. Funny.

Israel illegally intercepted another flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, detaining six Canadians in the process.

The government says it offered consular assistance.

But a contact for the three Newfoundlanders on board told me the support from the government has, largely, been “nothing.”

Almost 9 months ago, our press colleague Anas Al-Sharif removed his press vest following the announcement of a ceasefire.

And then we saw what happened next. May we ensure the bombs actually end this time.

I wish he, and so many more, were here with us.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Supplements are, for the most part, an expensive scam.

And the harms from replacing evidence based medical care with these scammy products are real.
joffirphd.bsky.social
As I've said before, I expect issue like this will get a lot worse as access to medical care declines in the US, thanks to the Repubs.

Highlights:

🔹️"Well over half" of American adults take at least one supplement; folks are "buying and taking record amounts."

My office is ordering three different companies to immediately stop selling skin-lightening products that contain dangerous and illegal mercury levels.

Mercury is poison, not a beauty treatment. We won't let companies put profits over New Yorkers’ health.

“Starving children screaming for food as US aid cuts unleash devastation and death across Myanmar”

Never forget or forgive that Trump, Rubio, & Musk *chose* to inflict this monumental level of death and suffering on the poorest & most vulnerable people.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted “no one has died” as a result of U.S. foreign aid cuts. In Myanmar, the grieving father of a 2-year-old boy who died after their food rations were cut calls such claims a lie.

The headline should be “Oz makes inappropriate and stigmatizing comments about overweight individuals”.

I don’t understand why medical outlets cover these “news” trying to sugar coat things

Reality:
- "Clean", "Natural", "Holistic", etc = marketing scam
- Homeopathy = science-free BS

Wellness industry is "capitalizing on fear" & spin.

Excellent investigation into the problems with private equity taking over IRBs in drug trials.

Once again, the answer is government investment into the drug development and review process. Yet this administration is only concerned with privatizing everything.

Without an understanding of immune tolerance, organ transplantation will not be possible. Also, their discoveries opened avenues for cancer and auto immune disease therapies.
Congratulations to these year's awardees of the nobel prize in physiology or medicine.

Really, truly amazing that OpenAI wants us to believe that they are worth a trillion dollars but also they are so desperate for revenue that they created an infinite SlopTok app that opens them up to a billion lawsuits just so that they can maybe someday make it even worse by filling it with ads.
