Pinning my new project: blackness and assisted reproduction. Looking to interview Black parents, Black egg/sperm donors and clinicians and fertility workers who've worked with Black patients. Drop me a DM! #sociology #reproduction #interviews #research
A research flyer calling for participants in a project titled Blackness and assisted reproduction. The researcher, Patricia Hamilton, is looking to interview black parents or parents-to-be, clinicians and fertility workers, black egg and sperm donors. Participants will receive £25. The poster has a white background with a light blue header and footer. It's illustrated with an image of a brown skinned baby, a cartoon medical needle, two pale pink hands holding up a red heart, two people sitting on couches talking to each other and a photo of the researcher.

It's alarming how many people need to hear this: racism is not the natural and inevitable response to the presence of (the wrong number of) racialised Others. It is a learned response, and as such it is contestable and replaceable.

This is anti-racism 101. Entry level stuff.

This is first time I’ve heard the govt making the Labour argument for controlling immigration.

Mahmood argues that controlling our borders is good for race relations, because uncontrolled immigration is feeding far right rhetoric and tensions.

Expect to hear a lot more of that.

Apologies, I didn't mean to suggest that Eggers had originated the idea.

Should we be calling them in? I don't know. It feels like a distraction (shout out Toni Morrison). The people who wanted to march but didn't and who might now feel emboldened...can they be called in? What is all this for if not the belief that we all deserve freedom? And can we win without them?
patriciahamilton.bsky.social
If I was still on Twitter (or rather, if Twitter still existed) I probably would've posted something about Saturday's march. Others have already said it but it's dangerous to dismiss the marchers (not the organisers) as stupid and jobless. I don't think it's true and it doesn't call them in

The EHRC shocked a UN discrimination expert by stating what the intent behind using "biological sex" is back in 2023

Of course they didn't define it - just as the Supreme Court didn't - because it is meaningless other than as a "get out of jail free" card for discriminating against trans people
21. The Independent Expert was particularly alarmed by a 3 April 2023 letter from the Equalities and
Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to the Minister for Equalities, by which it advised that defining the
term “sex” as “biological sex” under the Equality Act would “bring greater legal clarity” to the
implementation of the Act. In contrast, the Scotland Committee of the EHRC had itself on 28 February
2023 expressed concerns it did “not consider sufficient evidence has been presented to justify amending
the definition of legal sex in the EqA [Equality Act] 2010 to biological sex at this time”, noting that “the
Board should consider the risk to our perceived political independence if we are perceived to be aligning
with Government in the absence of robust evidence. This is a potential existential risk that such a
perception could risk the Commission’s existence going forward.” Additionally, the committee indicated
there had been no clear demonstration of a legal need or legitimate aim, even though “changing the
definition of sex could diminish trans people’s rights; for example, legal colleagues advised that, if the
proposed change were implemented, obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate would no longer change
a person’s sex in discrimination law. The Committee considered the Commission should be advancing the
rights of minorities and not potentially diminishing rights for some groups.”
22. In a meeting with the EHRC on 4 May 2023, the Independent Expert was shocked to hear that the
EHRC offered that advice without itself having any definition of ‘biological sex’; UK law provides no
such definition either. The EHRC however specifically conceded that, in the context of the letter, the
intended meaning of the term “biological sex” is to define women as “women who are not trans.” As one

Imagine taking cutesy pictures of your baby with a man who hesitates to condemn genocide, cuts welfare payments for disabled people, allows his cabinet to make unsubstantiated statements about mental illness and celebrate legal victories against trans people. Is it worth it? Can it ever be worth it?
