Fantastic read.
““Tom, tell that gringo he’s a moron,” an exasperated Gilberto said at one point in Portuguese to Jobim, who then translated for Getz: “Stan, Joao said to tell you that he’s always dreamed of making a record with you.” Despite the growing acrimony in the studio, the results were impeccable.”
Stan Getz / João Gilberto: Getz/Gilberto

You’ve been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who is coming to save you?

(I’m pretty much a goner)

I’m actually surprised that anyone is surprised, especially people who are paid to have opinions. This was always going to happen, but some talking heads gaslit themselves into denial, or even delusion.

Same. Is this an interest that blooms when you reach middle age? Or when the human world is too depressing to contemplate? Or both?
I’m really only just getting into it but I genuinely love birding as a hobby. The entire goal is to look at the bird. Is there a bird? There is a bird! Look at the bird! If you are very keen you can learn what to call the bird so that you can properly thank it for the joy you feel when you see it. 🪶

Shout out to the guy in the Men’s room of the Broadway theater I’m attending who said to his young son, “we don’t talk while we’re in the Men’s Room.”

Is there an aggregate account on Bluesky yet for face leopard reporting? I think I need to see that.

Agree.
A lot of people cannot grasp that their own personal and individual experience of the world is not universal, and they are totally comfortable showing immense cruelty to those whose experiences diverge from their own. This applies to so many issues that affect vulnerable people & it's a real shame!

Rest in Peace, Anthony Pinciotti.

I’m at a loss for words. Anthony used to play weekly with me and Lou Garrett at a place uptown that doesn’t exist anymore called Mona Lounge. He was one of the first real New York drummers I played with on a regular basis. I loved his energy, on the kit and off.

This year, my friends Dan Pugach and Nicole Zuraitis released a big band album, which I was honored to play on (2nd alto, of course!) Bianca Reimagined, dedicated to the spirit of the dogs that they rescue, has been nominated for 2 Grammys. If anyone hasn’t heard it yet, please give it a listen!

Here’s another photo from Adrien Tillmann from my recent octet recording. Hard to think of a better horn section than this one: Jason Palmer, John Ellis, Nick Vayenas!

Last week, I had the privilege of recording my octet for the second time (even if it has been 11 years since the first time!)

Im still decompressing from the experience, but I wanted to share some photos from the session, taken by Adrien Tillman.
