Day 23 of my 2023 favorites: Ball-winged Braconid Wasps!
So last year I found one of the dark colored ball-winged braconids (Hoplitalysia slossonae), this year I found another, and then a couple orange mystery braconids who were also sporting ball wings! They're just bizarre and I love them 🧡🌿🐝

Unvcovering the mysteries behind eel migration and spawning
Dr Amandine Sabadel said tracking technology has helped find the first clues as to how and where eels spawn but there is still more to do.

My first ever job was at a supermarket. I worked with an older gentlemen who must’ve been in his late 70s and while I can’t name the supermarket due to an ongoing legal dispute the guy must be dead by now so I’ll just use his real name: Barnaby.

Al Jazeera’s journalists risk everything to cover Israel’s war on Gaza, led by bureau chief Wael al Dahdouh who continues reporting even after losing his closest family.

Pāpāwai. Swung past today to see if anyone was about (will ask proper permission to take photos/sketches), and the lack of directional signage from town bummed me out. In 1897 this was the seat of the kotahitanga parliament, but Greytown seems fixated on tourism for pākehā settler history.

Pink-headed Reed Snake (Calamaria schlegeli). I don’t see these very often. They live underground and surface on rainy nights. They feed on worms and other inverts. Totally harmless to humans despite mimicking one of the most venomous snakes on the planet

Day 16 of my 2025 Favorites: An old encyrtid wasp friend, Ms Tetracnemus!

I saw one of these tiny gorgeous lasses in 2022 and fell in love, and didn't find another until early this year. The seeming endless diversity of tiny wasps will always delight me. There's creatures that just look like this 🖤

The King of Cats kisses the silver lips of the moon and tastes honey and ungranted wishes.

He dances through shadows and can hear a sigh across an ocean of time.

Tell him your stories and he will listen to every word, but not remember a single one.
The King of Cats is a cat who dreamt he was a man and never woke up.

He walks without sound and knows all your secrets but will never tell.

Ask him for a favor and he may grant you ten, or perhaps he'll just gift you a thing that is dead.
