Parabolic mic, and field recorder packed away in the shed while we have a few days of bad weather. It's still picking up bird calls! #Defiant

Nocturnal Migration looks to have bumped up a notch last night over North Baddesley, with increase in Redwing and Song Thrush numbers. Moorhen a strangely regular occurrence overnight.

Cattle Egret and Little Stint the highlights at Keyhaven / Pennington today.

High tide at Keyhaven
Watched quite a good number of waders coming into Keyhaven at high tide this morning. Initially the lagoon, and adjacent Fishtail lagoon were pretty quiet with just 2 Little Stints, and it was only…

Hard work around Portland, but a few nice pics. The most ridiculously confiding Raven I will ever encounter! and some decent birds at Lodmoor on the way home.
A couple of days at Portland Bill
Two days at Portland Bill were quite difficult going. Not much in the way of migrants, aside from Wheatear, Blackcap, Chiff-chaffs, and a steady stream of Swallows passing thru. Moth trap told a si…

A walk around Portland. Pleased with my photos despite the distance/heavy crops and high ISO. I should perhaps keep the ISO high on cloudy days in future, despite the longer post processing time needed for the denoising.

A walk around Portland
A while since I have visited Portland Bill, so after my overnight moth trap I took a walk to the Bird Observatory via a nice footpath thru horse paddocks, and then explored Tout quarry. The previou…

Feathered Brindle the highlight of a moth trap on Portland Bill. Weather forecast didn't live up to expectations of Migrants for me on this occasion.

Moth Trapping on Portland Bill
Feathered Brindle was the highlight of a moth trap at Portland on the night of 19th September, 2025. A moth restricted to the South coast, Portland in particular dominating the sightings of this sp…

Wheatear made lugging a camera round Pennington marshes worthwhile! Also a Cattle Egret seen briefly.

Autumn arrives on the coast
An enjoyable morning around Pennington Marshes, with plenty of migration taking place over the marshes, Hundreds of Swallows, and Sand Martins along with a few House Martins and a couple of Swifts …

1 Raspberry Pi, a Zoom H1 and an Audiomoth, and 3 days of cursing.
But I now have a permanent Bird call monitor / bat detector running.
Pretty sure the Sp.Fly is false. It did pick up a bone fide Firecrest though.
Looks like a Noctule slipped past with the Pipistrelle (20khz).

A bit of breaking news: a Collared Pratincole is being reported in the County.
I don't have details but looks to be Farlington?

Very little in the moth trap this morning, and the home-made battery LEDs don't seem to be making it until the morning, so no chance of going a little further afield just yet.

A Great Prominent on the house wall is always a fairly impressive sight though

Keyhaven and Pennington Marshes this morning. Picked out a Bar-tailed Godwit amongst Black-tailed Godwits. Plenty of Mediterranean Gulls flying East, at least 100. Plus an Osprey overhead flying North with fish. Also, 3 Sanderling.

High on numbers around Pennington, but not much out of the ordinary. The day was highlighted by some very close encounters, first with a Roe Deer just a few metres off the path, then later a Brent Goose on the footpath at Fishtail Lagoon. 9 Spoonbill, and a few Med Gulls flying over.

My first outing of 2025. Paid too much attention to the weather forecast instead of the tide tables, and missed Slavonian, Red-Necked Grebe and Lesser Yellowlegs in Lymington marsh area!
Did get a few photos of regular winter birds in the area, and my first Winter Heliotrope flower. #HantsBirds
