Fascinating thread but I don't feel it's that complicated? This is what happens when you go out of your way to performatively kick your own coalition in the hope of impressing voters who never liked you to start with.
Glad the FT is asking the question. Even if I’m not convinced they found a compelling answer.
I get that Starmer & Reeves are unpopular, I really don’t understand the extent of the dislike.

I’m not sure this project will be rescued by e.g. Wes Streeting: a similarly over-indulged creep whose key skills are also impressing journalists and shouting abuse at people to his left, presumably while also having sex with flags on TV.

The second one seems to be the sticking point to people where they seem incapable of understanding why those who actually like their immigrant neighbours and have queer friends might hate a man who is *meant to be on their side* instead at every turn looks to destroy the lives of their loved ones.

I don't understand the lack of understanding. There seems clearly three large tribes of hatred (by size):

- The right stirred into further radicalised hatred of the left
- Progressives who've watched them burn their values wholesale
- Some from Labour who hate them leading them into oblivion

But although this was a perfect chance for our democratic system to genuinely do public good on a massive scale, Starmer's failure was ignored or even applauded by those who think the opposition response to a crisis should be subservience, not holding power to account.

Starmer's failure to voice any alternative to the government's terrible handling of the pandemic, particularly locking down to late and coming out of lock down too soo,n was a missed opportunity to possibly save tens of thousands of lives.

The question “Why would a left wing party led by well-meaning people behave like this?” cannot be answered accurately, once you realise that it’s the question itself that is badly wrong on at least two counts.

So many of these incredible mysteries and conundrums can be immediately resolved by simply recognising: they are very right wing reactionaries, and they are personally mean, selfish, spiteful and unpleasant to boot. Explains the whole thing in one go, no further questions required!

And I mean, it’s not like they then regretfully and sadly helped the Tories to stampede through their war crimes impunity bill and their legalised criminality for state agents bill, because opposing them would look bad. They did that *because they agreed with it and wanted these bills passed*.

Sure, but what they *meant* by this was: we view any kind of meaningful opposition to right wing politics beyond “You’re not doing it hard and nasty enough” as dumb, infantile student politics for wankers.

I don't think it's fair to accuse every major American news outlet of manufacturing consent for all of Trump's many war crimes when CNN here is clearly very distressed that the president doesn't even know how to war crime good! Bro can't even plausibly deny them now!!

Ten bucks says the average, freedom loving American has never even heard of BYD, even though it's now the 4th largest automaker on the planet.

They should really unpack why that is sometime.

This shit needs to be burned to the ground, as any kind of response to stunts and marches the resurgent far right. “The largest fascist mobilisation since before WWII” is an emergency. Anyone who reacts like this is pandering and seeking their approval.

Now we’ve finally recognised the government has absolutely fucked it, we need to confirm they have *very specifically* fucked it in their pandering to the far right, who need to be relentlessly opposed with everything in the arsenal of democracy. I welcome people recognising this, and joining in.

And that’s the thing: while it’s possible to transgress socially gendered spaces, it’s uncomfortable. Gatekeeping just isn’t necessary. If someone thinks they belong there, it’s likely they do.
