@gallego.senate.gov I will move heaven and earth to ensure this is your last term, you pathetic excuse for a marine! You may be worse than sinema, which says a helluva lot about just how piss-poor of a human being you really are. I'm a disabled homemaker Ruben, all I have is time on my hands for you

In addition to this being appalling from Sen. Gallego, the fact that the senior editor at The Dispatch frames it as coming from a "rising star" Dem and in opposition to "progressives" — as opposed to in opposition to virtually every elected Dem except Suozzi, Moulton, and Newsom — is trash.
John McCormack v @McCormackJohn
New @TheDispatch: Arizona senator Ruben Gallego, a rising star in the Democratic party, becomes the latest prominent Democrat to break with progressives on the issue of transgender athletes and girls' sports. thedispatch.com/article/ruben-...
Will Ruben Gallego Lead Democrats Out of the Wilderness?
The issue of transgender rights is another area where some Democrats-such as Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts and California Gov. Gavin Newsom-think the party has gone too far to the left, particularly on the issue of women's and girls' sports.
Gallego now says the issue is ultimately a local-not federal-one.
"As a parent of a daughter, I think it's legitimate that parents are worried about the safety of their daughters, and I think it's legitimate for us to be worried also about fair competition. And I think the parents of these trans children also are worried legitimately about the health and wellness of their kids," Gallego said.
"There are some sports that some of these trans children should not be playing," he said, adding that it should be up to "local institutions" like school boards or associations to figure out the games and sports where "there should be a separation" based on biology. He emphasized that the message to children who identify as transgender needs to be compassionate: "Hey, listen, we love you.
We want you to be part of our community, but this is just the one place you can't play, and let's find other activities for you to be involved."

Reporter's notebook: I actually began working on this story shortly after footage of the incident showed up last month.

But by the time I finally got ahold of folks, the story grew: 2 *other* faith leaders I spoke with *also* reported being shot w/pepper balls while protesting this ICE facility.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

If we know this, then why was the immediate reaction to Trump’s announcement in Washington DC to point at Ward 7+8 as places that could “use” it better.

Chilling insight by @barbarafwalter.com: "Once citizens view their own government’s security forces as an occupying army, violence becomes inevitable. Trump’s team knows this… They’re trying to trigger the very unrest that would justify further crackdowns."

via www.nytimes.com/2025/10/07/o...
Screenshot from a NYT article by Thomas Edsall, quoting Barbara Walter of UC-San Diego: "The quickest way to piss people off is to send soldiers into their neighborhoods especially when there’s no reason for them to be there. It’s inherently provocative, and Trump and his team understand this. Research by the political scientist Robert Pape shows that the single most powerful predictor of suicide terrorism is the presence of foreign troops on local soil. People hate, hate, hate that. They hate the humiliation, the powerlessness, the feeling of being occupied.

"Once citizens begin to view their own government’s security forces as an occupying army, violence becomes inevitable. Trump’s team knows this. In fact, that’s the point. They are not trying to restore order; they’re trying to trigger the very unrest that would justify further crackdowns. In the end, violence serves their ultimate end: They want to create the illusion of disorder so they can tighten control and stay in power indefinitely."

This is a five alarm fire.

Serious implications here: a sitting governor saying basically that the U.S. president is planning to use the military to overthrow democracy in America.

Pritzker: "He wants to militarize major cities because he wants us to get used to the idea of troops on the streets. I believe he's gonna post people outside of polling places and if he needs to in order to control those elections, he'll assume control of the ballot boxes & count the votes himself"

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

A practice that would have been unthinkable under past administrations is becoming normalized: Sending ICE detainees, without due process, to far-flung prisons.

I'm so fucking tired of all the snarky nicknames people give Trump, as if it's getting back at him somehow. It's giving "Brandon." He's not the boogeyman, saying his name doesn't summon him. And calling him names really hasn't stopped the fascism since 2016 has it

Then don't expect trans people to sacrifice themselves for your rights either. We are all free or none of us are, and if you can't stand and die on this hill, your country isn't worth dying for.

I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can't protect ANY groups if we can't win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That's not "erasing" them; it's long-horizon strategy.
