Candidates in local govt elections face very little scrutiny.
I'm grateful to @misswhanau.bsky.social for calling out the abuse and raising awareness.
This 🧵 on why it matters (incl extra red flags for Nat party aligned candidates courting cookers)

Get your local election votes in by noon on Saturday! Why? To ensure a great future for your city, of course. And also, to help make politics civil again. We owe it to each other to lift the standard of discourse, keep it evidence-based, and avoid falling for conspiracy and abuse. Here’s the thing🧵

A viable cycling network is a vital safety-net for people and the economy. Is the cheapest transport network to install and maintain. A measure of a city’s competence and civility.

The government has gutted pay equity claims. Over 180,000 workers, mainly women, impacted. Day of action for #payequity

Richard is far too polite to say but you can also add George Wood, Wayne Walker and John Watson. All have been around for too long on Auckland Council without having made any positive contribution #nzpol

He won't say it, but...

Mike Lee, Maurice Williamson, and Christine Fletcher, if I had to guess based on recently comments

Mike's comments on Waiheke Radio were basically this: it all sucks and it has for years

Yes, but YOU'VE been doing this for 30 years, so... who did it?

Thank to this submission guide I've been able to make a quick one against the latest attempts by the govt to undermine our democracy. Super easy to submit before the 1pm TODAY deadline.

The govt's lack of leadership and ambition on #climateaction was on full display at the conference.
In contrast the business and sustainability leaders understand the opportunities to lead the world and seize the advantage.

MPs at the Climate Change and Business Conference sat on a panel titled "Beyond Adaptation: Can we secure a cross-party approach?"

The answer, after a watch-through-your-fingers car wreck of a discussion, was a resounding no.

Ex-climate tsar likens squabbling politicians to toddlers
MPs on a climate panel managed to agree on just one point, that govt won't be able to pay for adaptation. The rest was politics.

So many red flags in this profile but all dressed up with respectability.

Councillor Mike Lee has long been a bully and shouter at council (to staff as well as his colleagues). He brushes it off as "normal" in a political setting.
This 🧵 on how patriarchal culture has enabled his behaviour

I appreciate David Fisher's reporting on this - but the sub ed needs to be told there's no question mark needed in this headline.

Fisher gives us multiple clear cut eg's of how sexism & patriarchal culture actually works 🧵

Love this.
The government took away freedom. The community responded by choosing safe streets.
publicaddress.bsky.social
Meadowbank, Auckland, residents have chosen safer speeds for their streets twice since 2021 – but Simeon Brown's Speed Rule forced faster traffic on them. So they started making their own signs ... www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2025/08/06/t...

NZers are paying with their lives, and everyone pays the cost of lost productivity as a result of Simeon Brown's car brain culture war against safety and evidence. Tragically, this is the inevitable outcome of blanket increases to dangerous speeds
beebrhyte.bsky.social
Oh hey there, so, we had a fatality on our stretch of State Highway 1 today after Simeon put the speed limit back up to 100. After all the years it was at 80 with no fatalities. A life ended. SH1 closed for 4+ hours. We told them it would happen.

It’s not just the sheer vileness—it’s the compound long-term harm.

Dehumanising your colleagues, thereby discouraging future participants, *while also* squatting in powerful roles, robs us all of a pipeline of greater potential.

Kudos to Mayor Whanau for going through ‘em like a dose of the salts.

People may question why I’m opening up now, or calling this a political hit job. Frankly I don’t care what people call it, the community DESERVES to know who these men are. If they can’t treat colleagues with basic decency, they don’t deserve to be elected. Don’t be gross, easy as that.

It's so important that this stuff sees the light of day, otherwise the weight of it sits on the targets of the abuse and the abusers get to go on without consequences or shame or remorse.

Auckland Transport wasting time and money making streets MORE dangerous and the transport system LESS efficient.
nzdodo.bsky.social
Happening tonight, in my ‘hood where people walk & bike in record numbers: the forcible and controversial raising of speed limits from 30kmh up to 50kmh, on quiet side streets, around schools and a retirement village.

The symbolism is too much. Under cover of darkness; written in blood; etc #nzpol
Night road works in my neighbourhood. A crew is pouring red paint over the white 30kmh symbol stenciled onto the road. This is the upshot of Simeon Brown’s Speed Rule, which forces cities to undo any speed reductions undertaken since 2020 that in any way mentioned the existence of a school as “a” reason. No consultation required. No evidence involved. Just a mandatory blanket reduction in road safety, being imposed across over 1400 streets in Auckland, around over a hundred schools. For ideological reasons, under the fig leaf of “productivity.” Another photo of the workers (I asked them before taking these photos, and no faces are shown). They’re doing the job of spreading red paint over the 30 stencil, erasing the evidence that this community supported Auckland Transport in bringing in calmer speeds on our residential streets. In the photo are traffic cones; you need traffic management for a job like this. Want to know the industry standard safe speed for protecting road workers on city streets? It’s 30kmh, the universally recognised survivable speed for urban environments. That’s been the speed limit in this quiet peninsula neighborhood for the last two years, and it’s been great. And it’s now being erased by these hard working people, in favour of a forced return to 50kmh - which is many times more lethal in a crash, especially for vulnerable road users which is another way of saying children, old people, and anyone outside a car. A photo of some of the traffic management involved in this perverse political exercise. Traffic cones, heavy equipment, lighting, supervision. Culture war doesn’t come cheap. In the foreground, some of the high-value investment that Auckland Transport has recently completed in this neighbourhood - a raised crossing over a wide street with a continuous bike path and footpath.. part of a wider street upgrade to make it easier, safer and more attractive to walk, bike or take the bus - thus relieving congestion and reducing stress for anyone who needs to drive.

Is it horribly ironic that AT is now carrying out political orders that they know will endanger the people they’ve actively encouraged to walk, bike and catch the bus? Is it also alarming that Auckland Council has done little as a whole to intercede, in order to moderate this pointless, hostile, vice-signalling policy rolling out across the city? Does the Minister who’s now in charge of transport policy understand he’ll have to wear the consequences of this active decision to raise the risks on Auckland’s streets? Is this whole thing internationally embarrassing for everyone involved, on top of being dangerous for ordinary humans who are just trying to get around and who definitely did not vote for this? Yeah.
