In case anyone is curious how the US health system is going, I made a new patient primary care appointment in 2024 and it’s now been rescheduled twice. The earliest they can see me is August 2026.

The M6.1 shallow #earthquake near Bigadic, Turkey, occurred on a normal fault system, possibly the Sindirgi-Sincanli Fault Zone. A similar event occurred near Simav in 2011 and generated significant damage around the epicenter. ⚒️🧪

Since 1950, 43 other earthquakes of magnitude 3+ have occurred within 250 km of today’s earthquake. In that time range, the M4.8 Tewksbury, New Jersey earthquake in 2024 was the largest.

Today’s quake is too far away to be an aftershock of the 2024 earthquake.

A cursory USGS look-up reveals that this M8.8 tied for 6th largest quake ever recorded by instruments. Also, taxpayer-funded science and tech agencies save lives.

The National Weather Service issued an upgraded tsunami warning for a 100-mile stretch of Northern California’s coastline between Cape Mendocino and the border with Oregon after a rare 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s eastern coast.
Tsunami Warning Issued for 100-Mile Stretch of Northern California
The area includes Crescent City, which is particularly vulnerable because of its low elevation. The rest of the state was under a lesser tsunami advisory.

A rule of thumb for tsunamis is that in open ocean, they move at similar speeds to commercial airliners. If you're ever curious how long it would take for a tsunami to get from one place to another, look up the duration of a similar-length flight.
