Reading for pleasure has fallen by 40 percent since 2000. This is not progress. You should read because it's good for your brain, your soul. You should read because our freedoms will not long endure in a post-literate world. Most of all, you should read because it's fun.

“That would never happen” is what people say when they don’t realize the only reason “that never happens” is because their sense of normalcy relies on invisible systems, held together by people working nonstop to prevent “that”. That’s why the visible “thats” now are so alarming.

Note to media:
“Trump says” is not a story. He says A LOT. He lies a lot. Do some sifting, discerning, contextualizing. Otherwise it’s just stenography. And you’re embarrassing yourselves.

Dear parents:

You see all this stupidity going around? Please read to your kids. Let them see you reading. Keep books around. Buy them books if you can. Show them how cool the library is. Tell them book banning is bad. Make reading part of their lives. It helps make good people.

If that’s what they do to a United States Senator with a question, imagine what they can do to any American that dares to speak up. We will hold this administration accountable.

Because Black people know that there is no such thing as “identification” or “identifying yourself”. They aren’t saying Padilla didn’t identify himself as a U.S. Senator. They are saying that there is only one acceptable identity — credential — being white and, in these times, being pro-Trump.

Man. There are a lot of cynics out there. If what Booker is doing doesn’t bring YOU joy, there’s no need to shit all over everyone else’s appreciation.

Arresting 6 women for attending a meeting is a raid on our right to assembly.

It's simple. Everyone in the US enjoys the protections of the Constitution - even visitors. So if someone commits a crime here, you give them due process here. You charge them here, try them here, and sentence them here. You don't deport them to an offshore torture prison.

It's critical for everyone to remember what an Executive Order is. It is the President communicating orders to members of the executive branch. Policies to pursue, actions to take, etc. They are not laws. They are not close to being laws. They are formalized memos to employees. That's all.

Why read books that are banned/challenged in school libraries and classrooms?

If bans come to your neighborhood, you will be better prepared to speak up at school board meetings. Many people who challenge books are working off of shared lists and don't read the books in their entirety, if at all.

In cutthroat cultures, people kiss up and kick down. They protect themselves by currying favor with people in power and exploiting those without it.

In supportive cultures, people speak up and shield down. They protect others who lack power by raising problems to those who have it.

Last night @60minutes.bsky.social opened an otherwise superb segment on Germany’s approach to online hate speech by saying “in the U.S., most of what’s said on online [social media] platforms is protected by the First Amendment.”
No.The First Amend protects us against GOVT infringements on speech.

Do not mess with librarians. They let complete strangers borrow their books. For a living. Even the hardcovers. They are so much stronger than you know.
