the next day at breakfast he goes 'I stayed up all night reading that book, and - there wasn't anything in it! there's no invasions or zombies or stuff, it's just about two people, and I couldn't put it down.' It was a genuinely transcendent experience for him.

remember when Hertz bought a huge Tesla fleet? The loss on that turned out to be $2.9 billion.

you see a similar thing with guys like Elon. they acquire money and acclaim but they still don’t feel “cool” in the way that they perceived their childhood bullies as cool. so they try to replicate the bully behavior, but it never quite lands.
