I just instantiated 3000 asteroids in random directions and distances from the centre of the world and varied their rotations and scale. They're all the same game object with some fancy scripts to and features applied to them so they can blow up in a cool way I want.

Thanks, though this isn't going to be a mining based game at all, I just set this up to test things and asteroids should blow up if shot regardless of whether that serves a purpose in the game I think (other than looking and sounding cool). I'll be doing a similar treatment to the big enemy ships!

As a joke I thought I could hide a needle in one of these asteroids and the goal is to find it, and it changes on each playthrough and your completion time is your score! But that might be just the worst game ever

Ambitiously? Yes! I could throw this on itch.io as is and you can try and kill all 3000 asteroids for no reward! Realistically? Not any time soon. I really want to make something but this is very much a prototype and getting something more real is going to take time...

Last night I discovered in godot you can just say the shadows cast by your directional lights have less than 100% opacity and that made a world of difference in lighting and asteroid field in a space setting!

Thats really cool. I think I played wing commander prophecy or privateer or something beginning with p when I was a kid but I don't remember the ships. I quite like the back half of this one. Thanks for the reference!

Of course! I adored Freespace 2, but that was many many years ago, I've forgotten what the fighters look like in that, so any vibes must be subconscious 😅
