This makes me so angry. These people view all life as training for lifelong servitude/work. There's no room for interest, enjoyment, and culture in their bleak vision of education. At least she'll never be in power to see it through. Though Reform are probably worse.

This lurid headline is about British tourists no longer getting away with overstaying in Schengen. Or being 'illegals', as it's often called in the UK.

A Rutgers professor has been forced to flee the country for his safety, after targeting by a far-right student group that was *checks notes* claiming they felt unsafe.

I'm horrified.
I'm angry.

FWIW, this is the best book on how Handsworth came together as a multicultural community in the 1960s and 1970s in the context of overtly racist government policies. Brilliant sociological study of resilience.

Awful news from Wales, the St Fagan's Museum has been broken into and prehistoric goldwork has been taken. Its painful to think what objects might now be at risk. Thoughts with the museum team who must be devastated, all speed to the police and a curse on the crooks.

A long shot: does anyone have an image of Iseult Gonne’s signature?

I acquired a 1930s book signed “Iseult” on the flyleaf and, as it’s an uncommon name, wondered if it had been hers.

“Well preserved” walls potentially dating back to Saxon times have been discovered in excavations at Speedwell House, the building just off St Aldates which is proposed as Oxfordshire County Council’s new HQ. As first reported by the Clarion, relocation plans are currently on hold after the find.

Plans to move Oxfordshire County Council’s HQ to Speedwell House, just off St Aldates, could be rethought after “a potentially significant archaeological find” at the site. OCC has recently sold County Hall for redevelopment as a hotel, meaning the council will need a new home from spring 2027.

I was well over 30 when I wrote and published my first novel, and fully agree with you!

When I turned 30 I had not yet written my first published book or my first published novel and did not know (or know of) some of the most important people in my life. I didn't know how much my life could still change, and did, after the age of 30. There is so much your life still yet to live.

Not sure you’ve seen these images here, but in the UK they’re arresting dangerous anti genocide protestors for “supporting terrorism”. You can sleep easier knowing these thugs are off the streets.

Feels like a situation where -- and look, I'm just spitballing here -- the media could take some reporters and cameras to various parts of Portland and report what they see rather than just do stenography for someone with a long history trying to game the system with lies and exaggeration.

I'm 48 now and regret not keeping a diary because I'm alarmed at how much of my life I've utterly forgotten. I mentioned this to a writing workshop comprised mainly of older people I taught last year, and one woman said, "Start now. START NOW. I'm 77 and I WISH had started keeping a diary at 50."

A student in my publishing course is interested in researching book pulping and book recycling. Do we know any work or introductory material in this area?

(Work on remainders, print runs, supply chain, raw materials all relevant, too.)

Reading MacDiarmid's A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle again. It was published 100 years ago next year. Kenneth Buthlay's annotated edition from 1987, published by @asls.org.uk, remains the best guide. The poem itself is as thrilling, ambitious and flawed as ever it was.

RIP Pat Fish, who died four years ago today

Six years ago, one of Pat’s first performances of this song, which transfixed me when I heard it a few months later at the Lexington. I love how the lyric plays on different senses of not knowing someone. #thejazzbutcher
