Twas the night before Waspmas, and all through their nests, Wasp larvae were munching on paralyzed guests. Eggs were stabbed into young insects with care, In hopes that wasp larvae would soon be there. Soon larvae were nestled all snug in their hosts, Eating ‘round viral organ, or else they’d be toast And each caterpillar, beetle, spider, and bug, Had a wasp larva giving it a nice friendly hug. Arose from the pupa, NO butterfly, But instead a nice orange wasp, nimble and spry. Away to the new host she flew in a flash, A caterpillar in which to lay her new egg cache. Some beetle’s insides will help wasp larvae grow, Whilst munching their innards, these beetles won’t know. Amazon tree boa (Corallus hortulana), an arboreal snake with many beautiful color morphs. This is one of the subtle morphs but I think it is stunning! Something about the ghost pattern against the olive background, and those pink and black accents are just... 😙👌 *chef's kiss*

In mid-November, I agreed to an experiment. Anthropic had tested a vending machine powered by its Claude AI model in its own offices and asked whether we’d like to be the first outsiders to try a newer, supposedly smarter version. Claudius, the customized version of the model, would run the machine: ordering inventory, setting prices and responding to customers—aka my fellow newsroom journalists—via workplace chat app Slack. “Sure!” I said. It sounded fun. If nothing else, snacks! Then came the chaos. Within days, Claudius had given away nearly all its inventory for free—including a PlayStation 5 it had been talked into buying for “marketing purposes.” It ordered a live fish. It offered to buy stun guns, pepper spray, cigarettes and underwear. Profits collapsed. Newsroom morale soared. This was supposed to be the year of the AI agent, when autonomous software would go out into the world and do things for us. But two agents—Claudius and its overseeing “CEO” bot, Seymour Cash—became a case study in how inadequate and easily distracted this software can be. Leave it to business journalists to successfully stage a boardroom coup against an AI chief executive.

The remarkable wings of a tiny wasp. These are the fore-wings and hind-wings of a Litus cynipseus wasp of the Mymaridae. The wasp is only 0.4mm long, and its wings are very narrow. Wasps are amazing!

I never worked up this 2016 photo from the Peruvian Amazon because I was running into trouble identifying the wasp, in spite of its distinct markings.

But taxonomic resources are more accessible a decade on, and I'm happy to announce that she's the rarely photographed Polistes torresae.
