The idea I find interesting is that we might not just end up with competition between smaller firms fueled by the GPU glut, but that there might equally be a race to salvage usable structure from frontier models too expensive to run via distilation.

Meaning the only thing that would need to happen for everything to return to a relatively normal state including in the commissions market, etc. would be the collapse of the US AI industry and considering Trump basically pissed off everyone in the world I don't think that outcome is that unlikely

because the USA seem to be the only country in the world that bet on hyperscaler hosted AI models instead of open source AI models usable on smaller systems from smaller datacenters to ordinary PCs and even phones.

This is a Kerbal Space Program level understanding of the problem. Yeah, at the highest level it could work. It just presupposes a ton of engineering advances and perfection of several technologies that haven’t been demonstrated beyond small scale proof of concept.

i wish that there was a way to form habits that involved being super lazy and exerting zero willpower and really just engaging with your current obsession all day and never drinking water or exercising. but i've been trying this strategy for a couple decades and unfortunately i don't think it works
