Block family taking their ball and going home
In other words, rather than accept a union, the current owners closed a newspaper that’s almost as old as the US.
The Post Gazette was killed today because the Blocks, after fighting the longest strike in US history at 1,133 days, were irrevocably told by the Supreme Court today that they lost. So they're closing a newspaper that first published in 1786 because they're mad.

listen

if i put something down somewhere

and i do not look, unobstructedly and directly, at it and make deliberate note of its location

it's fucking gone

not even the memory OF a memory of that item's location remains

the entire category of thing that that object was in

NEVER existed

I lent my dad my copy of The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones over the weekend and it's been so hard to not borderline harass him 10 times a day for progress updates and his thoughts so far 🙃

Overheard our managing editor tell a page designer "thankfully the 102-year-old man is 72 inches long" and it struck me how little that sentence would make sense outside a newsroom

I've managed to commandeer a desk in the main courtroom that just happens to be next to the chief public defender and now people have started asking me questions that I am 100% not qualified to answer

I want to be on a jury so badly but I don't think any attorney would ever pick me
Teaching about the jury today and reading “Why Jury Duty Matters” again.

It is a book that should be at the center of civic and democracy debates. Perhaps today more than when it was written, it offers a path forward. #Books

I miss living out in the sticks because today is one of those days where I feel like I'd find a game trail and wander until I found a nice log to sit on to just contemplate

Court shenanigans are the best because people have a hard time believing stuff like this actually happens
BIG news out of the US District Court today as Judge Sara Ellis demands Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino stand beside a sign of a cartoon clown holding its hand 🤡🫳 yea high to prove he's allowed to ride the Tilt-a-Whirl.

I think any story about Trump's autocracy should be mostly about the people and institutions who failed to stop it. This guy isn't a political genius, everything else just happens to be rotten. 'Toddler Consolidates Power In Household' is a story about incompetent parents, not shrewd maneuvering

We gotta do something about mental health because this guy showed up to court in a tin foil hat and, when asked by the judge if we was sure he wanted to represent himself, he held up a picture of Jesus and said we all might recognize his representation
