The highlight of my 2024:

Closing night of the Busan International Film Festival, October 11th. I had such a blast walking the red carpet.

CW: protester being struck in the head by a pepper ball

Footage I took earlier of the moment Reverend David Black, a regular protester outside of the Broadview Detention Center, was shot in the head with a pepper ball by ICE agents on the roof of the facility.

Let me be clear: It’s ILLEGAL to deny federal workers back pay after a shutdown.

There’s a 2019 law that guarantees it, but Trump is once again trying to break the law.

You don’t get to punish people for doing their jobs just because you’re failing at yours.

My very first gift guide appearance, if you wanna stuff a stocking or two... Along with @thedennemichele.bsky.social.

Fresh insights on race and gender, sex and power, and love and loss will give readers plenty to chew on.

Both/And

Edited by Denne Michele Norris (HarperOne) $27.99

In this stunning anthology, Norris, editor-in-chief of Electric Literature, brings together 17 essays on trans life in America, by writers such as Akwaeke Emezi and Raquel Willis. Across the collection, the complex and multifaceted experiences of trans people of color are rendered vividly, and the pieces urge political action in the present while offering a beacon of hope for a more just future.

Want to Burn This Place Down

Maris Kreizman (Ecco) $26.99

“In a country plagued by problems in which individual grit is not nearly enough to prevail over rotten systems,” Lit Hub columnist Kreizman writes, “working hard begins to feel more like a Sisyphean task than a practical solution.” Tempering her anger with wryness and lots of Xennial nostalgia, Kreizman bucks the stereotypical trend of growing more conservative with age with this fierce and witty collection.

Federal officer blasts chemical spray into vocal but nonviolent Portland protester, video shows

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

Really feels like trumps ultimate goal is to just get so many troops in American cities and hopes that one of them goes rogue and starts shooting

This is heinous, unforgivable behavior. This is systemic child abuse. This is flagrant disregard for children's humanity and fundamental rights. It is a policy that reveals the thoroughgoing moral depravity of its authors.

Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

It is the greatest political lie ever told in American history. Not just some busted campaign promise, but an entire campaign on false pretenses. Literal cartoon supervillain behavior: waiting until you get in office and implementing a comic-book plan to annihilate US government virtually overnight.

The conversation between Klein and Coates showed me that a lot of people who screech about “infighting” on the left aren’t aware of the fact that marginalized people have been forced to learn how to regulate their emotions during conflict, and so, are better able to hear what’s actually being said.

This is so indefensibly insane: Speaker Johnson is refusing to seat Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva because she'll be the 218th vote to release the Epstein files. Johnson swore in Rep Walkinshaw (VA) w/in 24 hours.

Johnson is abandoning his job to instead protect a convicted child sex predator

This should be on top of news feeds. It’s is a really important victory. The judge’s affirmation that non citizens have constitutional rights is a reminder that the Trump administration is acting illegally and unconstitutionally. www.lawdork.com/p/judge-will...
Judge William Young's ruling against Rubio and Noem is a lesson for all in the Trump era
Young lays bare the unconstitutionality of the Trump administration's student deportation efforts — and issues a challenge to America. Also: More court pushback.

I hope everyone realizes what’s going on here: This is likely fake interest being drummed up by the people behind this AI tech; i.e. this is Hollywood spin to make it seem as if people want this. People do not want this.

The president just gathered the highest ranking officers in the military to tell them that he may order them to kill American citizens -- and that they better follow his orders. All in response to a series of crises that have no basis in reality.

I don't know how to yell any louder.
