Starting from a young age Kagero lost a lot of people he was close to. Eventually he came to believe he was cursed and befriending him was a death sentence, but he's far too needy to push people away. As a result he over works himself trying to please and make up for his perceived selfishness.

When Dalamud fell the resulting natural disasters in the shroud took out the majority of the moon keeper clan Kagero had grown up with. He was left to pick up the pieces with his two surviving childhood friends who later became a couple.
