Another great article praising the great work of local Madison archeological historians!
Archaeologists Are Finding Dugout Canoes in the American Midwest as Old as the Great Pyramids of Egypt. “Once in a while, though, they’ll find a specimen that shares a timeline with Beowulf, the Phoenician alphabet or even early math.” (via @charlescmann.bsky.social) [smithsonianmag.com]

It is a relief to know that our ancestors were worriers — awake in the darkness with crowded minds. Their worry is why we’re here.
Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:

Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.

This is really informative! We should do this with wonderful historic places that urban renewal turned into freeways and parking lots! (Better yet…let’s build back the vibrant, usually black, neighborhoods we lost.)
An interesting way to help people visualize what a ruin used to be.

I love space info…but this was perhaps not the best thing to read right before bed. Alas. Monkey Brain… here we go… sleep tight everyone!
Anyway here’s a cheerful piece about how the Sun will eventually destroy all life on Earth (but not by exploding, so, you know, there’s that)
Here’s how the Sun will end all life on Earth
Our home star won't go supernova, but the end of its life will be no less spectacular.

We made life hard for wild turkeys. We worked hard to reintroduce wild turkeys and help them get reestablished in the state. We get annoyed by the chaos they now cause in cities. We embrace them as symbols of anarchy.

They don’t think about us at all.

This used to only be a bike lane by time of day. Now it's a full time buffered bike lane. A block over from here will be a two way cycletrack.

Piece by piece a network is built.

REMINDER: Those choosing to live in subsidized suburbs for a bigger house and yard are NOT also entitled to free-flow car traffic capacity (aka an “easy car commute”) into the city at the expense of the taxes, health, safety (hint: bike-lanes) & quality of life of city-dwellers.

News events make me reflect on the larger “celestial” picture. I’m thankful that I saw three amazing celestial events this year with my kids: Total Solar Eclipse April 8, Aurora Borealis Oct 10, and a Comet Oct 15. The universe is magic!
