Outlaw, fiddler, & folk hero James Macpherson (c.1675–1700) was hung in 1700 for being Romani. Prior to his execution Macpherson composed his famous “Rant”. Macpherson sang his lament on the gallows & smashed his fiddle before meeting his fate.

James MacPherson's broken fiddle, as exhibited in the Clan MacPherson Museum, Newtonmore. An open, flat wooden box. Propped up inside it is an old, broken, stringless fiddle. Parts of the smashed body of the instrument are collected at one end of the box. The fiddle's bow is held inside the lid by two leather straps.

Sadly, 5 years ago today: we lost Christopher #Tolkien at the age of 95. He edited around two-dozen books of his father's works, and brought us much of what we now know about Middle-earth, for which we are all incredibly grateful. He is missed. Namárië.
