#31DaysOfGraves Day 10 #Urn this is the grave of two of my g grandfather’s 1/2 sisters & 1/2 brother in the row behind. My Pop was executor of Tottie’s will. I think Aunt Dellie left him property in Stanmore which he sold & bought in Toongabbie - moral - don’t take property advice from Pop!

Historians say of my father’s favorite sculpture that she was a funerary urn, guardian of the remains of some high-ranking figure from ancient Ilici. She was originally painted and had “glassy” eyes 💘

Kein Name, kein erkennbares Grab ...

... als wäre sie beim Auflösen eines Grabes vergessen worden.

Das Schwarz-Weiß-Foto zeigt eine Urne auf einem Sockel, platziert auf dem Boden. Die Urne ist im Vordergrund und leicht verschmutzt oder patiniert. #31daysofgraves maybe this is cheating haha but I found an urn (day 10), a cross (day 23), and an obelisk (day 16) all in one photo! Taken at Glasgow Necropolis in 2009. Signs of my interest in #familyhistory have been there for some time #genealogy #archives

#31DaysofGraves #Day10 #Urn Janet Kirkland's family are related by marriage to my maternal Muir line (my mystery Irishman who was probably a Moore). This memorial stands in the churchyard of Carmunnock Parish, near my present home. It's a lovely wee place and some relatives are buried there.

A grey granite headstone topped with a draped urn upon a pediment. The inscription reads: Erected by Robert Whyte in memory of Janet Kirkland, his wife who died 30th November 1898, aged 63 years. Also James Whyte, his father who died 6th August 1861, aged 74 years. Janet Park, his mother who died 20th June 1833, aged 37 years. The above Robert Whyte, who died 29th February 1916, aged 85 years.

In Victorian days drapes signified a veil between the living and the dead. After a death many things in a house could be draped and if a breeze moved a veil it meant the dead had past on.

This memorial records the death in 1800 of Rachel O'Brien who's clothes caught fire when she was with her child. She dashed out of the room to make sure her child was safe. She was 19.
