In celebration of World Octopus Day, we wanted to revisit one of our favorite cephalopod sightings, the glass octopus — Vitreledonella richardi filmed during a month-long #PhoenixIslandsCoral expedition in 2021.

Sonyō-in (尊陽院), a sub-temple of Honpō-ji (本法寺), has a rather stunning ceiling.

I agree with Alon, that's incredibly rude and unprofessional

The email has found me carefully dusting the haunted portrait gallery. The Drowned Duchess is still asleep, pillowed on a tangle of green weeds, and I don’t want to disturb her. More than one colleague has been found floating in the gilded frame, her hands around their ankles.

They certainly are very aware of their own importance

My parents used to have Weimaraners. The first one used to go to work with my dad and she would sit at the table in meetings like she was in charge. Would point blank refuse to get down.

Lovely dogs.

There's a woman who pops up on my Vinted feed quite regularly because she sells a couple of brands I like. She wears the stuff and does this "I'm a little teapot" pose with the most miserable face you've ever seen. It cracks me up every time.

Coping with the fact that tomorrow is Monday by convincing local strangers to send me pictures of their pets throughout the week.
Chalk art on a sidewalk of a multcolored burst of angular lines, under which "GOOD DOG" is written in fluorescent yellow, pink, and black with an arrow pointing up to the line burst, encouraging people to put their dogs in the middle and take a photo because sharing pet pictures makes the world a better place. At the bottom of the sidewalk it says "SHOW US YOUR DOGS!" with the handle of the art instagram @rocks_on_the_block

Did you tell him "All the locals call it Mac"?

There's no shame in not finishing a book. We can't all enjoy everything all the time.

Yeah I have more in my Kindle and the library pile. I just tell people it's 150. 🫣

It's too late for me. I have 150 on my TBR and still bringing more home

Tapirs are horse-adjacent, but are often underestimated because a) they're pretty shy in the wild, and b) their legs are much shorter so they appear small, though they're the biggest native land animal in the Americas, south of Mexico City.
Photo of Chupi, a lowland tapir. It's mainly his head that's visible, as he looks over a partition in his stall, eyeing a half-eaten breakfast sandwich (biscuit with cheese and egg?) in a person's hand, in the foreground. Chupi has a long snout, and large white teeth are visible as his lips are pulled back a bit.

Chupi's keeper notes that Chupi found a package of Pop Tarts in their pocket and has been checking for snacks ever since.

It's #buyastrangerabook day!

@seanjones.org has bought a copy of We the People : A History of the US Constitution by Jill Lepore for me to give to someone.

blurb in second image.

If you'd like it, get in touch.

UK only.
Front cover of the book. Blurb for the book.

On the 250th anniversary of America's founding - a landmark history of the US Constitution for a troubling new era. The US Constitution is among the oldest constitutions in the world - and one of the most difficult to amend. Although nearly twelve thousand amendments have been proposed since 1789, only twenty-seven have ever been ratified.

Tellingly, the Constitution has not been meaningfully amended since 1971. Without amendment, the risk of political violence rises. So does the risk of constitutional change by presidential power.

Leading Harvard historian Jill Lepore captures the stories of generations of ordinary people who have attempted everything from abolishing the Electoral College to guaranteeing environmental rights, hoping to mend their nation. Recounting the history of America through centuries of efforts to realize the promise of the Constitution, we witness how nearly all those bids have failed. We the People is the sweeping account of a struggle, arguing that the Constitution was never intended to be preserved, but was expected to be gradually altered.

At a time when the risk of political violence is all too real, it hints at the prospects for a better, amended America.
