Join the Laughlin lab and our new NSF funded project! Awesome opportunity to visit forests across the western US and examine the functional basis of demographic responses to drought and wildfire.

Great PhD opportunity with an excellent supervisor:

Quantify traits of tree species across the western US to determine how tree populations and forest communities will respond to drought and fire.

We do science at places like Teakettle in the hopes of informing better decisions. But moments like these make it feel like our science is just informing future historians of our decline.

They fired probationary employees across the federal government on Feb 14 as a scare tactic to shrink the federal government. And it worked. The US Forest Service subsequently lost 25% of its staff due to voluntary early retirement and deferred resignation offers.

Biologists have been trying to rid Yosemite of bullfrogs since the '90s, a challenge for both the biologists and the bullfrogs. Native to Eastern North America, they — the bullfrogs, not the biologists — were brought West in the late 1800s and have been a problem ever since.

I'm bizarrely happy my IRACDA grant wasn't restored, so I don't have to grieve it all over again...

But also, this sucks for so many scientists & repercussions will be felt by all Americans & folks around the world, even if they don't know it.

I’m just a girl screaming into the void that the destruction of our institutions WAS THE ENTIRE POINT.

This is why @timothysnyder.bsky.social’s *SECOND* (of 21!) lesson in his book On Tyranny is “Defend Institutions”

The Republican-backed budget bill that passed in the U.S. Senate Tuesday authorizes dramatic increases to logging on federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. But Oregon counties won’t see most of those revenues if the bill clears the U.S. House unchanged.
Federal budget bill would boost logging — but cut funds to Oregon timber counties
The proposed budget bill would increase logging on federal lands, but most of that money won't go to Oregon counties that typically receive a portion of timber sales.

Skipper love 💚 One of our favorite backyard butterflies

Here's one of my insect comics to celebrate #InsectWeek, featuring my favorite butterfly the skipper! 🍃
Four-panel comic depicting a small orange butterfly looking up at a monarch butterfly in the air. The small butterfly says, "Look, there goes a monarch butterfly! Everyone loves monarchs. So regal and elegant! Nobody notices a little skipper like me. Nobody." A nearby ant says, "Hey, did you see that monarch?"

It's not just #NIH. It's not just #NSF. It's not just #NASA.

The whole scientific community has to make clear that all science across fed agencies is being destroyed in the US.

We can't just ask for our particular piece of the pie. The whole pie is being thrown out - saving your bit won't work.
