Anna has some cool results from a pretty bonkers hybrid system - hit her up if you're looking for a speaker in your PAG workshop!

Are you organizing a talk session at PAG 33? I would love to speak about my postdoc work on the genomics of variable facultative CAM photosynthesis in a hybrid Yucca species! Possible workshop topics include: hybrid genomics, abiotic stress, non-model species. Please DM me if you're interested!

Today seems like a great day to re-up my slides from 2017 about the Nazi takeover of German physics, in part because in my estimation, a lot of American physicists in 2025 are confused about whether "agreeing to work with them" is resistance (it's not) and whether it works (it doesn't) 🧪⚛️

In light of this deeply illegal activity at NSF and the ongoing attack on American science, I'm posting the slides from my 2017 talk at the American Physical Society about the Nazi take over of German physics/why German is no longer science's lingua franca 🧪

how is the entire Northeast not showing up at data centers with torches and pitchforks over this

Bloomberg research found wholesale electricity up ~270% in areas near data centers

It doesn't seem like nearly enough people are taking it seriously

One A.I. image isn't too much energy, but 5 million videos? Per day/hour/minute whatever. It's not sustainable

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

it’s best not to ever think about mushrooms too much

if you only want to eat things that don't feel love or pain I recommend sticking to fruits. maybe beans and corn. mushrooms, I'm never really sure about

I keep going back and looking at this picture. It seems, no matter what topic I'm working with, I really like bright, saturated colors.

so maybe when this grant is submitted I'll go back to my beloved undergrad cell biology textbook and just write out the whole list of checkpoints
kathleenrhoades.com
and from the human side we don't care if there's a viable embryo in there or not, we just want to eat the delicious fruit or nut, so it's in our interest to figure out how to circumvent the checkpoints to get the tree to make a fruit regardless. but not a small project!!!
kathleenrhoades.com
and I have to explain that in embryo development there are SO MANY checkpoints to make sure everything is going well and if something goes wrong (common) the plant will just give up on fruit/nut development b/c why spend that energy on a non-viable embryo
kathleenrhoades.com
I get questions a few times a year about why fruit & nut trees will drop a bunch of immature fruit well before ripening, depending on the crop it's usually the June Drop or August Drop or whatever month. When I say it's likely an entire PhD project to figure out I get surprised reactions

Not only is this ridiculous - one of my asthma triggers is pollution; reduce that and my inhaler use drops significantly - but it's also eugenics. Fascists love deciding that sick and disabled people are the real problem. Don't fall for this shit.
