Should have abolished ICE when we had the chance. Now it's going to be a big ol pain in the ass.
jeffsharlet.bsky.social
The question isn’t whether ICE has become secret police or its functioning legally within very bad law. Very bad law made it possible for form secret police.

The bipartisan-backed hubs represented a rare clean tech industry where the US was on the cutting edge

If you look at the sheer insanity of what government officials and agencies openly post on XShitter, it becomes abundantly obvious how much the press is complicit. If Dems did even a fraction of this poasting it would be saturated in news coverage.

Mozart:
"Confutatis maledictis" - when the wicked are confounded. "Flammis Acribus Adictis." How would you translate that?

Salieri:
Consigned to flames of woe.

Mozart:
Do you believe it?

Salieri:
What?

Mozart:
A fire which never dies, burning you forever?

Salieri:
Oh, yes...

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

You could just talk about Jim Crow. I promise you, there's no need to leave America's shores to talk about life in a fascist state

Under the Third Reich, most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state.

The dual state is characterized by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.

Ruben Gallego on whether Trump is talking to Democrats:

“Look, the President clearly has some kind of dementia, so I think there's a he's probably talking to himself, or think he's talking to a Democrat, but I sincerely doubt that that's actually he's actually physically talking to a Democrat.“

I shook my head and said "Here's the part where I lose my job, I guess. It's been fun teaching you."

More laughter.

And a few voices: "I didn't hear anything!"

"Me either!"

"Nobody heard anything, Dr. Eustis!"

Teaching at this social/political moment is deeply weird. And satisfying. (2/2)

I was showing clips from Star Wars Ep. IV in my Mythology class this afternoon. My selection included the scene when Imperial Stormtroopers stop Luke and Ben at a checkpoint on their entry to Mos Eisely.

"Well, there's ICE," I blurted out, to a chorus of "OOOOOO!" and uproarious laughter. (1/2)
