We knew from the moment we heard it that “social cohesion” would be one of those Orwellian terms which would be used to cover all manner of state sanctioned abuse and deprivation of civic freedoms.

Australia declines to join statement criticising Israel for Unrwa demolition The Albanese government has declined to sign up to an international statement expressing concern about Israel demolishing an aid agency’s headquarters. The foreign ministers of 11 nations, including the UK, Canada and France, strongly condemned Israel for demolishing the East Jerusalem headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Unrwa) in a joint statement issued on 28 January. It called on Israel “to fully abide by its obligations to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip in accordance with international law”, saying current aid levels were inadequate. Canberra was invited to join the most recent declaration, but declined the offer without an explanation, one diplomatic source told AAP.

If you're wondering which reporters in Australia regularly cover these think tank networks, there aren't many. The independent journalist Lucy Hamilton is a stand-out. Anthony Klan from The Klaxon is another, along with Michael West from Michael West Media. The Guardian keeps tabs on some of the individuals and organisations in the ecosystem. The ABC and Sydney Morning Herald report sporadically on it. Dr Jeremy Walker from UTS is one of the most prominent Australian academics working in this space. He made a detailed 75-page submission (No. 243) to the committee that discusses early fossil fuel industry knowledge of the disastrous environmental impacts of the greenhouse effect, the corporate funding sources for different free-market think tanks, and the links between various groups in the ecosystem.

From the explanatory memorandum
Sections 80.2, 80.2C and 80.2D would be explicitly excluded from the definition of hate crime as these offences are targeted at conduct that would be inappropriate to capture in the definition of hate crime. Urging violence against the Constitution captures a broader range of conduct aimed at opposition to the institutions of Australia as opposed to violence directed at groups distinguished by race, national or ethnic origin. Hate crime conduct, while violent and offensive, generally falls short of terrorism, and is distinct from genocide. As such, advocating terrorism and advocating genocide should not be captured in this framework and are best criminalised through existing frameworks within the Criminal Code.
