I am a little less optimistic: I strongly suspect the current institutions are mostly incapable of dealing with this new approach, and we may quickly - globally - end up with something unrecognizable.

That’s the one!

And @profile-labels.bossett.social is good too, for highlighting things like handle changes.

Don't ask me about the business model. I expect they're banking on users swapping directly through their app and them getting to capture a spread (since on a couple swaps I previewed on the wallet there seemed to be a good 2% price difference from what I'd have expected).

On the bag at MERGE Madrid was a United Network NFC wallet. Seems to be the same approach as the Tangem - a card with the NFC chip which acts as your key holder.

(Retails for $50, close to Tangem's $55).

It probably signals that currently distribution is worth whatever price you have to pay.

Raiku sounds interesting: effectively a futures marketplace for Solana block space.

If successful, it should help incentivize validator geodistribution, given purchasers should be interested in getting access to responsive nodes.

For anyone who wasn't around the console trenches at the time... Microsoft put out a complex flowchart explaining how game sharing would work, and the steps you had to go through for a disc you'd bought to be playable on a friend's Xbox.

Sony replied with this ad.

You don't need laws when users take action.

The Xbox One approach changed when players rebelled, and the PS4 happened to be coming out at the same time. Even Sony jumped in and lampooned Microsoft!

I don’t expect them to backpedal unless Windows users are likely to bolt.

Bluesky client forks like Deer should display them. Mobile client support seems more hit and miss.

I use a few. Anti-Alf Aktion has been great. Others, like the PDS labeled, are more about curiosity for me right now.

I used to have that approach for Mastodon, and hadn’t articulated before why Bluesky feels different and why I’m more willing to do it.

I suspect it’s simply the decoupling of identity from storage. Running a PDS is low effort, but even so, I also know I could trivially migrate in the future.

Jay replied to a humorous post. Someone asked if Singal was banned yet. Jay referenced the original joke.

That started a shitstorm of people yelling past each other where things come across both as “rabid users gonna foam” and, sadly, as Bluesky leadership being dismissive of valid concerns.

This led me to finding out what Zizians are and... woof.

Bruce Perens was spot on about there being no isolated nuts anymore.

Yeah, that was my thought exactly - it seemed a particularly "web2 API Key" mindset skeet.

You could (say) nuke every single mention of AppZ off the official appview, but it seems that'd be insta-kiss-of-death for any trust Bsky.app may have had.

fwiw, I’m not sure it’s specifically Venezuelans - every Latin American country I’ve spent time on has some neighboring country they despise and act xenophobic against, and a score of others they consider themselves superior to.

The Venezuelan diaspora might just make that one more visible.

We don’t have to be okay with it or accept it in order to do the work we want to do and support our families and communities. We can do small acts and we have friends everywhere even when it might not seem like we do. Monktoberfest always reminds me of that. And we gotta find our “dance mode.”

This is one of those situations where both sides have valid points, neither of them is being particularly good at making them, and all the digging in is just making things worse.

However, only one of those sides has a measure of professionalism expectations thrust upon it.

Here’s a thing I’ll add, as someone who’s been there: if you’re the CEO of a platform with millions of users, you don’t get to have as much fun on that platform, period. And your job is to eat shit every time a legitimate critique of policy comes up. That’s the gig. Don’t sign up if you aren’t game.

i am catching up on the moderation discourse and it’s really annoying that this episode basically goes back to leadership trying to have a goof and a gag. there’s not a lot of room-reading happening which comes across as immature and unprofessional

I so want this to succeed. You’re telling me I can create an app and the whole persistence layer is owned by the user, and creates this immutable web of data that can be riffed on by other apps even when the original app is gone?

I need to carve time out to build something in the atmosphere.

Good piece on the growing security asymmetry, and the issues businesses now face beyond simply making their code airtight.
